Awarii Dunes Update
« on: April 02, 2010, 09:36:52 AM »

I drove past this project in October of last year very pleased to see the progress and construction was still progressing.

I know Jim has posted on his project in the past, maybe we can hear from him again very soon.  I agree with his comments about the previous 9 hole Craneview layout being too far of a walk between greens and tees.  The property from my memory has natural rolling and gentle contours with decent sized sand dunes.

I am hoping the ground game will come into play very similar to the other Prairie Courses in the area?

I found their website as well.

I was fortunate to tour Awarii Dunes today with Tim Hartnett, Jim Engh's #1. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. The small pocket of dunes this course occupies screams golf. It's scale is perfect, it's movement ideal. The subtle variety is artfully experienced as one journeys from one end of this pocket to the other. Some of the dunes are bigger (on the back nine) than expected. Jim Engh has created a walker user friendly routing that is sure to be a hit, only 5 miles outside of Kearney Nebraska.

Awarii, an indian word for strong wind will be the farthest east course in Nebraska adding to the strong rota of Prairie (Irish like) links golf.

Heres a link to Jay's article written last year.

And some pictures Jason provided on another thread.

One of the more difficult aspects of this project was not scrapping the loam away to find great golfing ground, it was marrying (and repairing) the existing irrigation system, and corridors, into a cohesive walkable design, on the old nine holes (formerly Cranview). The new back nine holes will ebb and flow through dunes land north of the original course. Giving Awarii a seamless cohesive 18 holes of golf. The range of holes has a nice spectrum of short to long. All of them having lay of the land, at grade, contouring. Interesting doglegs with uphill par five's that have devilishly small greens. The 6th or 7th(?) will feature the hugerest green at 18,000 sq/ft. The ninth begs for a Heroic carry, complete with ample width, allowing for not only the plodders, but the wind, too.

A-1 bent throughout, all one low height of cut, should allow Awarii Dunes to accentuate the Nebraska landscape, and lInks golf aficionados,  for generations to come.

They are having a membership premier one day sale on June 29th, with deals on what is already a reasonable rate. Worth considering if one wants to get a foot hold in the region.

I should add that currently the front nine is being grown in. The back nine is being readied for what are basically final touches, because most of it is just laying there. Most of the tree clearing is done

There's an expectation that some balls will be hit on the front nine by mid-Fall, this year. With the growing conditions we've been blessed with this spring, they're sure to have a good stand going by Late Sept.

One last note; The intimacy afforded throughout this course is refreshing. As is Jim's departure from his dramatic "gathering" mountain style. The site is very special because the pockets are so easily delineated by the flatter farm land that lies adjacent on certain holes. I think it's the 3rd hole where the juxtapositions of the topography is an interesting perspective, evoking just how special the land, the course traverses, is.

Adam,

I was glad to hear your comments regarding the flow and terrain.  Were you able to see all 18 holes?  I did not have a chance last time to get out of the vehicle and was curious to see how the original front nine flowed from tee to green?  The previous 9 routing was downright bad.

The back appeared from the road to flow very well and be very, very walkable.

I can also tell you that Kearney is getting excited about having this course built just south of town.

Jason, It was tough to get a feel for the transitions on a couple of holes because of the grow in. W e just could not get out there without walking. Thanks to me breaking my toe the other night, I was unable to walk too much. But if I hadn't broken it, I would've been at Ballyneal and missed Jim's call. However, I suspect that since it was a focus of the team, they did it well.

One other note that should be obvious, this is not a course, from the look, that you will immediately assume is a JE design.

I met the owner and what a great guy. He truly is dong this project for all the right reasons. Love of golf on a sandy site. I mentioned to him that I thought it well positioned being the farthest eastern of the Prairie Links. He immediately corrected me that to him, it felt more like Ireland. Of course I disagreed with him, but only because I've never been to Ireland, only Ballyneal.  ;)

“it felt more like Ireland.”  It’s a good thing they closed the feed yard across the highway, because that would not have felt or smelt like Ireland.  Funny, when I grew up in Kearney it felt like Nebraska, not Ireland...

Sorry, I think Prairie Golf stands on it's own.

Jason, and all;
I agree about the prairie comment. Since I've never been to Ireland, I give the principle his due, understanding the importance of sand based architecture.

Oh yes, On my way there this day. Spoke with Tim Hartnett yesterday....

Only 4 holes left to seed.

Will report  back after today's tour with Jim.

Some new stuff to explore.

Thanks Jason, and I agree that comparing the course to Irish links misses the opportunity to establish the more apt Prairie Links category

I can't wait for Awarii to open!  From what I have seen & heard, it will be a great course.  The Sand Hills continues to grow great golf!

Congrats to Kent!

Would definitely agree, the photos in the Golfweek link were some of the first I have seen of the finished product.  Will be stopping by this summer on our way to your place Chris.

Already booked a June 1st stay and play.  The fly into Omaha and out of Denver road trip is a must do for the discriminating golf tripper. A great course every 180 miles.

Another update.  Funny how the author hits all the right buttons but then scares even me with the mention of opening and closing 600+ par 5's.  I am looking more forward every day to seeing this course perfectly placed between Omaha and Mullen.

It's the reverse Ballyneal (from a purely geographic sense) - in relation to closest major airports to Mullen.

I wonder if the UN-K golf team is using the practice facility at AD yet?

The Awarii Dunes website is up and running with a limited course tour.  Pics of a few holes.  I have already predicted the Dismal Devil will have at least 6 three putts and 2 four putts on our first round in less than a month.  He has done little good with his hands since the time I have met him.

Wow, these greens look tough.

You can follow this link to the course tour, I just wanted to post the stay and play section to bring awariiness to the friendly caddies.  That kid can't be her husband.
