Not much on here except some links to a few threads that discuss Mackenzie's involvement (or lack there of) at Tijuana Country Club.

-Has anyone here played it and was it worth the trip?

-Can you share your experience getting to/from the club from CA?

For many years, the saying was that the best course in San Diego is Tijuana.   It is a very strong Bell course with some really good green complexes.  The best way to visit--park on the US side and walk across the border and take a taxi.  The club is only about 5 miles from the border :and is accessed by main roads.  If you drive across the border, it may take over 3 hours to get back intp the US, but it rarely takes more than 15 minutes to walk through the border.

I used to play it a lot when my son was at UC San Diego. After the zoo that is Torrey Pines, it was nice to go to TJ and have much of the course to myself. It has some cool green complexes, and cool hazards. The maintenance then was spotty (This was before they claimed it was MacKenzie) and much of the grass was kikuyu. It was probably about a Doak 4 or 5. If you are in the area it is a nice alternative from the San Diego courses, but it wasn't worth going out of your way to get there.

The taxi was the best way to get there. It is close to the bull fights.

The Tour used to play the Agua Caliente Open there. At one time it had the highest purse in golf.

I assume you still feel ok going to Tijuana? We used to feel good about Juarez and Reyanosa, but unfortunately I just don't now.It is a long way from Juarez but encouraging that the situation may be better out west.

The ride from the border to Tijuana CC is very safe because you are in good neighborhoods and travelling on major roads.  I used to play there a lot many years ago.  It used to have some really good money games and there was a pretty good purse tournament that ended in 1998.

I was thinking of doing this same very trek to CCJ during the upcoming GIS in San Diego Feb 4-9. Google earth timeline shows they have been working on the bunkers since 2006. I figured this would make an interesting golf architecture tour. Feel free to message me if anyone is interested in joining.

Thanks for the information. If this excursion works out, I will take your advice here and avoid driving in. It appears even a better way to go than driving to the border is taking a super cheap trolley ride from downtown SD, about a 45 minute trip. Walking across the border with a set of clubs slung over my shoulder seems a bit odd, but I've done it walking into Canada. So, other than the patrols with machine guns and a Cialis shack every ten feet, should be about the same deal...

If you do take a taxi, make sure you take one that says "Taxi Libre" on it.  Those are apparently the reputable taxis which are regulated.  I was told on my trip down there not to take any taxi that didn't have that written on them.  I stayed in the hotel overlooking the club, it is a very nice place should you spend the night across the border.  The name escapes me, but it is where the president of Mexico stays when he is in Tijuana.  Never played the course, but am intrigued by it.

Last week a board member of Tijuana Country Club discovered my site’s photos of the property, including Bell routing, when it was known as Agua Caliente. The photos are from a 1930 program for an event there which he had sought for three years. I found the program in 2012 in storage at the local library. Upon learning this, and although I have photos of every page, he visited the library the very next day to investigate for himself. He is thrilled to have the photos, hole descriptions, etc., to know that Bell did indeed design the course – and to have it all in time for the club’s hosting of the Mexican Open later this month.

Footnote: He could have had his prized possession sooner. I emailed the club in 2012, but got no response.
