Prince's CG - Sandwich, Kent, UK
« on: February 13, 2009, 06:50:46 AM »
I'm playing there next Sunday, and the website isn't giving me much help deciding which two of the three nines to play (and neither is a search of the forum here).

I'd appreciate the opinion of anyone who has been there.

Playing all 27 would be preferable, but, as I'll be driving back to London the same day, probably not possible.

cheers,
Scott

Scott- I would say they are all quite nice. The 1932 Open course is not part of any two nines, many holes are lost totally. The nines are Shore, Himmalyas and Dunes, I can't really remember which are which, the two closest the sea would be my preferred two but its a close call. I like your idea of ALL 27 ;)
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.

Dunes & Shore are the better combo imo.  Himalayas is good, but it does run through an area of more inland quality turf and I generally don't think the 9 stands up to the others in terms of interest. There are some good holes there such as #4 to the double green and it has more of an open feel as it lies on the other side of the house from the "main 18" - which can feel sort of cramped at times.

Thanks guys, that seems to confirm my completely baseless feeling that the two closest to the water, which are also the oldest I think, must be better because they are closer to the water and older ;D

Princes has been done on here before, but never completely. Your version is awaited.

First two threads on how it was.

And last year 18 of the 27 holes.

As they are due to punch the greens the week of BUDA it’s unlikely to get much play from the group.  I think this is a shame.  It’s in a similar quality to e.g.  Hunstanton, Wallasey, Aberdovey and Littlestone. I.e. not far below the top of the tree.  And yes its reputation suffers because of its two near neighbours.

I don’t think there’s that much difference in quality between the three loops.  The Himalayas are perhaps the most uneven over the most varied terrain, but the par 5 followed by the par 3 along the coast are GREAT.

Enjoy your weekend.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Thanks Tony, much appreciated.

While reading those threads I noticed a menrion that Prince's used to have a sister club here in London, and some googling reveals it's now called Mitcham GC - about a mile from where I sit at home typing this - where I happen to be having a hit on Sunday. Small world.

It has been a long time since I last played Princes, but I still have quite clear memories of the holes. I don't know how good it is other than to know it is good, but I do prefer Princes to all the courses you mentioned with the possible exception of Aberdovey.  I spose its time to get back there.  I have this idea that Princes is one of the last courses built in the UK before the the craziness of moving shed loads of dirt became vogue.  This is probably due to a lack of funds because Morrison was involved and I don't think he was adverse to moving dirt.  That said, Princes is still very modern in its approach of eliminating blind shots.  Though I bet the idea of squeezing 27 holes onto the site made it very difficult to transverse the dunes rather follow between them as I think only something like 12 holes (maybe 13 or 14, I can't remember) were originally located in the area the Dunes and Shore now occupy.  The designers may also have felt that the dunes were so flattened that any sense of magic by trying to play over them would be hard to recreate.
