Tommy, this week I became reacquainted with a gentleman in his 90s whom I hadn't spoken to since I was a kid - former Cambridge and NZ representative Ian Ewen.
I happened to have with me some notes, including a couple of pages out of "golf courses - design, construction and upkeep" I had photocopied to bring to our AGM 24 hours later and had printed off the title page of the book as well, to validate the others. When Mr Ewen saw Bernard Darwin's name under Colt, Alison, Simpson and the others, he began telling me how he used to play golf with him at courses around Cambridge 70 years ago, like it was nothing. He also knew Henry Longhurst and Alex Russell. Russell was in his late 50s when he came here to lay out Paraparaumu in '49, so Ewen hit drivers for him over a period of six weeks.
