CC of Buffalo by Ross...............GW #80
« on: March 07, 2004, 06:17:49 PM »
Its neat to see a course from western NewYorks snowbelt

get recognized by  Golfweek.  C& W  once credited design to

Donald  Ross.   It seems to have come out of nowhere.

Could someone tell us about the routing, terrain, green
complexes, and standout holes.

Im also curious about the design attribution and
any  restoration  efforts.

How does this course compare with   Park CC  (Alison),

Monroe (Ross), or  Yahunadasis (Travis)

  thanks  !

I have not yet played CC of Buffalo. However, I have played Park and Monroe. I felt Park was very good, with interesting greens and some fun green complexs. I did not find Monroe to be as exciting

The only things I know about CC of Buffalo come from Ross' Book, 'Golf Has Never Failed Me.' The book includes a map of the course, which is divided by a road. There is also a picture of the twelth hol, which appears to be an intimidating par three over a flooded ravine.

and they did play a US Open there - 1912 -won by John McDermott. He also won the US Open in 1911 at The Chicago Golf Club -the last time they played the US Open there.

I really enjoyed the course and think it is the best of the Buffalo area. These pictures are from around 1992, so likely things have changed. When I played there last, the trees were really bad and were creeping out to the fairways in a hurry. The course would have been fun if it was not so heavily treed. One quirk of the course is that the first, 18th and clubhous are on one side of a major road, and the rest of the course is on the other. Great opener with huge risk reward options (trees did ruin the effect - but its all there)

The quarry hole the 6th, about 190 I think. Series of filled in bunkers below.

This is the second shot over an old quarry to the 10th (or 9th?) green. Great green location and quite dramatic setting.

This was the 12th hole you refered to and was a great mid length par three.

I think this is the 13th, with the quarry from 6 coming into play creating a great plateau green

I'm missing the final holes, with 18 featuring a spectacular rock garden climbing 40-50 feet from green to clubhouse

this is a great old northeast course.......Ross' design features are still prominent.........it is very private and very tough to get on.........I think it is better than anything in Rochester including the Hill.

Ian - Awesome stuff. The green complexes look amazing, and much wilder than typical ross stuff, esp. pics #1 and 4.

Best in the Buffalo Area? These pics make it look like it could vie for best in NYNOM (New York North of Manhattan)

Sean,

You'll laugh but I've not seen Oak Hill or Monroe CC, so I can't judge.

I work at Park CC (Alison fairly intact - again too many trees) but I think CC of Buffalo is better. There are a lot of really fun holes, some nice green sites and a decent property. Of note, the best of the green sites are what I have shown.

Yannandasis and CC of Troy are worth a close look.

Oak Hill is great -East is the better (and more legendary) of the 2 courses but the West has some great holes as well.  Country Club of Rochester located just up the road from Oak Hill (Walter Hagen's old stompng grounds) is also a very good course.

I have been invited to play at CC of Buffalo -never got around to it.  Will have to take the 90 mile drive from Toronto when the weather improves - based upon the photos.

How is Niagara Falls Golf Club ?- another one on the list I have not played!

Gerry,

Has some great holes, and a couple of real forgettable ones.
I would play it if you can, but not lose any sleep if you don't

Had a spectacular par three right on the cliffs of the Niagara gorge with a spectacular view down to Niagara on the Lake. Robert Moses made that disappear for the parkway.

Play CC of Buffalo before anything else in the area, Lookout Point is the other recomendation (not perfect - but many truly great holes)

Gerry B.

The 1912 US Open was not played at the current CC of Buffalo course. It was played at what is now a Buffalo muny, the Grover Cleveland Park course. Don't know the architect of that one.
Also, the best Ross course in Rochester after the Oak Hill courses is Brook Lea Country Club. Anyone played it?

Re: 1912 US Open

Thanks for the update -I stand corrected -was not aware that the club had moved locations. Similar to Philadelphia Cricket Club which hosted the US Opens in 1907 and 1910 on what is now their 9 hole St. Martins Course.

To: Ian Andrew

Was Tillinghast the original designer of Niagara Falls (as credited on some lists I have seen) or did he do a makeover like at Scarboro in Toronto in the early1920's(he actually redesigned did 14 holes of the holes at Scarboro-and there are some gems -in particular 3 of the par 3's) . Please advise if you know the answer.

thanks
