Might have to visit beautiful Norfolk, Virginia sometime this fall and might have time for a round of golf. Admittedly know nothing about the golf scene there other than Tom Doak's Riverfront is right there.


If you had one round in town, is that where you'd play? Or would you make an effort to go see something closer to Richmond?

I'd play the Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe and Royal New Kent. One is in Williamsburg, and the other is just outside it.

In Va Beach, Cavaliers is pretty cool... a Doak 5ish. Plays through a neighborhood along the bays and coves of whatever waterway that is. Prob the best in the area. Princess Anne CC, which is next door, looks similar but I haven't played it. Broad Bay CC, is also in Va Beach, but I'm not really familiar with it other than I'm told that Marc Leishman is a member

Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach would be a top choice. Andrew Green has recently finished a renovation. Cavalier is a fun Banks course. Cedar Point Country Club will provide an enjoyable round.


If you want to go across the CBBT to Cape Charles, I've always liked Bay Creek.


I'm not sure if you need military access but there's Sewell's Point which presents itself as a Ross course but there's more than enough evidence that it's a Flynn course.

Riverfront isn't one of Doak's best. Bayville can be a tough ticket. I only mentioned those two because you mentioned Richmond.

I was based with the Army at Fort Monroe (Hampton) in the mid 90s. I primarily played the military courses even as I considered the area as a bit of a golf desert — Not a lot of high-quality options


As for the military courses I can’t remember if Sewell Point has a DoD gate, but it is a serviceable option. I remember the course as being a bit short with classic architectural features.


A more challenging military course is the Fort Eustis Pines Course. Designed by George Cobb in 1956, it has good length and was interesting architecturally by using the rolling pinelands terrain effectively.


Apparently, there was a renovation in 2011 which I can’t find any information about. I hope they didn’t move any of the holes because it was a pretty solid layout.


Eustis definitely requires DoD access to get to the course.



Speaking for those two military courses only, they are both 5s on the Doak scale if I was forced to pick one over the other, I would pick Eustis. I wouldn’t drive more than an hour out of my way to play either one of them TBH. Actually make that 30 minutes.

Unfortunate timing on the thread topic as I drove down to Norfolk today to be told the flight I was supposed to get on wasn't going today.  Wish they had notified us before the 3+ hour drive and my wife took off from work...typical.


I did see signs off I-64 for Royal New Kent and told me wife I planned to play there.  It seemed about an hour, but we were north side and there was no traffic in the bridge/tunnel.

I recommend Cypress Cove Country Club in Franklin, VA  original 9 holes built in 1922 additional 9 holes by Russell Breeden in the 70s.  The back 9 holes play through a pine forest.


It is a little less than an hour from Norfolk, VA.

Wayne nails it... These Princess Anne #1, Cavaliers #2, Riverfront if you dont mind the little drive.

I had a nice day and round at Bide-A-Wee a short ~20 years ago, FWIW.  Would say it’s a Doak 4+ back then, we had a nice day.

I've only played Princess Anne and Bayville.  I'd favor Bayville if you had one play.  Andrew Green has only a few pieces of work out there, and this one while constrained by the routing is all him.  He was given free rein.  Conditioning is great as well.  Princess Anne has I believe 6 par 3 holes, and 6 holes where you tee off across a road!!
