TRAIGH GC Taster: 2023-24 Winter Tour New
« on: May 27, 2024, 01:47:14 PM »
After playing Scarista we made our way north to explore Traigh Niosaboist and the turquoise waters of Seilebost Beach. There is an immense inlet, Fadhail Losgaintir estuary, which the A859 follows. It is well worth leaving some time to probe this wonderful area. The road turns inland and the island turns from beach to hilly boulders. Our destination was Tarbert where we caught a ferry to Uig on Skye. No golf on Skye, just passing through to catch the ferry from Armadale back to our starting point, Mallaig. Maybe 10 miles to the south is Traigh Golf Club in a perfectly idyllic location set above several beaches and looking toward the Small Islands of Rum, Eigg and Muck.

A private course was built circa 1900 for the landowner. Jack Shaw Stewart, the land owner requested Johnny Salveson, former Captain of the R&A to redesign the course in 1993. The charmingly traditional But and Ben clubhouse was built and a small membership was taken on. This is the course we play today with a few minor changes.

Off the charts charming....and manned. While honesty box courses are lionized, its much more welcoming to be greeted by someone in the house. Its also a refuge if folks wish plow around the course more than once.

Dave (on the right) and I met Jeff Butcher of thetraditionalgolfer fame.

That said, sometimes, needs, must.

Course Map

A very good uphill short hole hits the golfer for the opener. There is bailout room right. Another shocker, the second stares back at the tee as if to say...I dare ya.  One can elect to play blindly to the fairway nob or go around the hill by driving left. Neither option struck me as good.

The punchbowl green is not receptive from the hill, but does open up for those who played around the hill. Below is the approach to this par 5. This is an an outrageously fun hole.

The third plays down, toward the beach. The green is sheltered under a fairway lip.

Jimmy's Choice (4th) is yet another clever hole using the land expertly.  Many will have to layup off the tee; some will have the length to reach this 250ish yard hole.

A spot on layup will leave a view of the green, though most will rightfully choose to be a bit more cautious and leave a blind approach.

Great green.

More to follow.

TRAIGH Tour Cont

We play back toward the beach for the par three 5th. The architect did a good job of creating a very different hole to the 3rd, also a short hole.  Another cracking greensite.

Similar to the 4th, we climb the hill for a short two-shotter. Again, the greensite adds to the incredible variety of Traigh.

The punchbowl green is just over the brow of the hill.

A flat hole hole, the 7th is a par 5. Its Traigh's least interesting hole, but there is a catch. A sinkhole appeared shy of the green in 2015. It was repaired, but remains a feature protecting the green. If caught behind the grass bunker, it will take a great shot to get close to the hole because the green slopes well left.

Still playing along the flat for the drive, the 8th rises sharply for the approach. The green is snuggled down over the brow.

These may seem like easy holes, but with rollout and blindness, its dead easy to leak shots away.

Lovely setting.

A downhill short hole, the 9th can be a bit tricky because of the burn...which I didn't see from the tee.

Play is from the left...the burn can just be seen.

I am happily surprised by the quality of Traigh and completely smitten. Johhny Salveson did a fantastic job with the redesign...I wonder what else he designed. Every inch of the property is well used to squeeze out this 2346 yard 9 hole course. Despite the seaside course not being links, its my kinda place. The good news is Mallaig is just up the road for dining and lodging options. I hope more people visiting Scotland for golf give Traigh a go...its that good.  Traigh goes straight in to my top 10 of the Nifty 50. 1*  2024

We were planning to play one more course on the way south. Our first choice was the Hillhouse 9 at Kilmarnock. The weather forecast looked dreich so we opted for an emergency night out in Glasgow to see Niall on his home turf. Golf the following day would be at Leadhills which is south of the city. A good night was had by all and our digs were very reasonably priced. Unfortunately, when we arrived at Leadhills the weather was not obliging. This was the first time I stopped by a golf course with no building adjacent. Folks pay in the hotel I guess. Maybe someday I will make it back, but for now it was time to head home.

I’m delighted Traigh has made the Nifty Fifty Top Ten. Well-deserved! Thanks for the photos. Not sure we’re making it over there this year.

From 11:30 onwards you can see what you missed at Leadhills. Looks like Peter Finch played it in the same weather you passed on.

That looks about right Doc. Although, the course looked alright despite the weather.
