Uphill Par 3's
« on: April 09, 2003, 05:04:28 AM »
Uphill par three's, are they out of fashion forever more? What features help make them acceptable?

In particular I think of the 14th at Wentworth which is a solid hole but one which would be questioned if you came up with that routing nowadays.

What good uphill par three's do you know of and what characteristics make them playable and interesting?

cheers

Jamie,

Burma Road's 14th rises a full 14 meters (45 feet) from the back tee to the green proper!

it is pretty brutal really (45ft). Would we have the courage to leave a hole like that now or would we bulldoze a supposedly more respectable offering out of the hill side?

The 18th at Brora is a particularly good one, due to features such as:

--requiring a solid long iron or wood/metal shot to reach the green
--a green which will accept such a shot but cast aside (or shortor even long) anything less than perfection.
--a putting surface which offers a chance for a birdie
--being situated right under the clubhouse window, so all your triumphs and follies are open to public view

The great Jimmy Miller bogeyed the hole in his course record of 61.

I agree with redanman re: the old 5th at Pebble.  Another great one is the 1st at Painswick, although with about 100 feet of elevation change, 240 yards, and a huge pit in front of the green it is probably a "par" 3 only for those who are semi-mortal.....

Good choice Rich I would also add to the characteristics that make it enjoyable is the whole intoxicating experience of the Brora course.

The 7th at Muirfield is a good (slightly) uphill par 3 and one of the few that i can think of where the pin is fully in sight of the player. The 13th is a great par 3 made especially difficult because the green is partially sighted. Why is it difficult to play to a green where you can see the front part but it disappears on the horizon line?

Shinnecock's has two great uphill par 3's - #2 and #11.  Both put a premium on hitting the green.  #11 has to be up there with the best in the world.  Wind, tough green and big trouble if you miss the green.

!3th at Sand Hills is one of the most intimidating of all par 3s and plays uphill to the top of a large sand dune. It is as visually terrifying as #5 at Pine Valley, both being heroic in nature.

13 is fun to play from a survival standpoint; as at PV 5 one is elated to leave the green without a disastrous result, or for that matter, to be able to put down a score at all!

At 221 yds in the robust prairie winds I can't think of any other uphill par 3 which presents a greater challenge to the golfer who stands at the tee with that stunned, awestruck look we're all familiar with.

Those who look back fondly on the old #5 Pebble obviously have a natural draw.  For "fade is my life" me, there are no fond memories.  They didn't call that the world's only dogleg par 3 for nothing.   ;)

Great submissions so far, Gene is right on re #13 Sand Hills.  Terrifying is the right word for it.

Another great one is my personal whipping boy, #11 Shinnecock.  150 yards of terror itself there....  good call John Lovito.

There's actually a pretty good one at a horrid golf course out here called Tehama (Clint Eastwood's club).  #3, only about 140 yards or so but uphill, partially blind, with a very nice green set against the hillside.

I'm sure there are lots of others... funny, I tend to like these types of holes in general... the more sky-line the green is, the better.

Before anyone else gets in there I thought I better give mention to the Alps (no. 5) at Prestwick.

How do you like Railway Sleepers for skyline Tom!? An absolute nightmare of a hole which sits perfectly with all the other quirks of Prestwick

cheers

Jamie:  damn, it's been 16 years since I played Prestwick, so I don't remember the hole in question here.. I do recall a great blind par 3 over a mountain, where an old gent stood on top telling you when it was clear to hit via hand signal, and then indicating the results of your shot with other signals... getting the "OK" sign from him, which meant it was on the green, was one of the great thrills of my golf life... is that the hole you're talking about?  I remember it being blind as can be, but the net effect not being uphill, it just being up OVER the hill, with the tee about level with the green on the other side.  I could also be way off, and/or talking about a completely different hole.

Good news is I'll see this again in person this July.  I can't wait.   ;)

The 15th at Philadelphia CC is a long, uphill, almost reverse-redanish par three that is very special.

The 6th and 11th at Fenway bear recognition, as well, for their respective ferocity at differing lengths and for different reasons.

There are several of them around London.

In addition to the 14th at Wentworth, there is the 4th at Sunningdale (Old), 10th at Berkshire (Red), 4th and 16th at Worplesdon...

Addington has two uphill par 3's in the first three holes:

Hole 1 - 165yds, into prevailing wind. Smallish green tilted from back right to front left. Bunker front right.

Hole 3 - 215yds, prevailing wind into and off left. Not sure how much uphill, but it plays about 240yds. The green has quite a severe tilt from left to right and wraps itself arount a bunker front right.

All mentioned are good holes, even if Addington's opener is an odd start

Rich - Brora!  That is the most obscure (not incorrect) example anyone could have thought up!  You get around too much!

How about #9 at Jupiter Hills (Hills) for a little more terrestrial of an example.

yes you are correct the 5th is the one that doesn't really go uphill but OVER the damn hill.

I am sure you will enjoy it in the summer!

Laun

The 4th at Sunningdale, hitting that green is one thing but negotiating those contours is another. A great short uphill par 3 indeed.

cheers

Jamie - FANTASTIC!  I love that golf hole.  Oh yeah, I can't wait to see it again.

And Jonathan, Brora is remote to be sure, but how much so for a member at Dornoch?   ;D

I'll get even more obscure.  The old 6th at Ballyliffin (The Tank).  It's not that remote, however, as I'll be there this time next week!  Eat your heart out, Huckaby!

Rich I am sick about that for I should be having my virgin round at Brora next week too. I feel the 2nd at Bandon is a great example of a strong uphill par 3.

Been there, done that, Rich.

And I'd be more jealous if I didn't have my own pretty damn good trip set for 3 months from now.  But I am jealous anyway - I want it all!   ;)

Number 7 at the Orchards is a good example -- although I think Shinnecock 11 the best of all.

Out here in Minnesota there's a beast of an uphill par 3 at the Rochester Country Club, which was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, circa 1925. The hole is #5, and from the tips it's 170 yards of carry. If you've succeeded in reaching the green, your work isn't complete, because the very slick green slopes decidely from back to front. The green is protected by bunkers left and right.

From what I know of Tillinghast, I would guess all of his courses would feature at least one uphill par 3.

BTW, I found this site just recently and I'm enjoying it thoroughly. I thought I was alone in my interest in GCA. I guess not!

Those holes may be 5 of the best 10 par threes in Melbourne - a city renowned for world class short holes.
None however are anywhere near as severe as 14 at Wentworth.
