I don't understand why it's so far from the back fence, heck they're wasting another 20-30 yards.  ;D

But seriously, I'm shocked, shocked I say, that ANGC is lengthening another hole.
Over time, the guy in the ideal position derives an advantage, and delivering him further  advantage is not worth making the rest of the players suffer at the expense of fun, variety, and ultimately cost -- Jeff Warne, 12-08-2010

I bet many former champions will be looking forward to the change. Nah.

Seemed inevitable this would happen sooner than later. I wonder if their intent is to put the driver back in most players hands vs the 3 wood off the tee. My recollection is the scoring average on the hole over the last 4 or 5 years has been mainly in the 4.4 to 4.6 range, which would help to justify the change, but how will the scoring dispersion be impacted? I don’t think they’d want less eagles, but rather more balance between birdies pars and bogeys.

It hasn't been too low. In 2019, it was 4.474. That's the lowest it's been, and so you'd have been better off saying 4.5 to 4.7, maybe. The historical average is 4.77.

The 2022 chart is up above.

4.6889 * 90 + 4.8764 * 89 + 5.0192 * 52 + 4.9231 * 52 = 1373
1373 / (90 + 89 + 104) = 4.85

I think the goal is probably to get mid- and long-irons into the players hands rather than wedges or 8 irons.

The goal is to make it a "momentous decision" as to whether a player should go for the green or not, as Bobby Jones intended it to be. It is a very easy decision to go for the green now with such short clubs in their hands.

I hope they cut down a couple of trees on the right side of the landing area in connection with this.  It has looked too pinched at the corner the last few years.
