Can I please introduce myself as the Newest Member, which has got to be a little better than P.G.Wodehouse's Oldest Member!

One is positively humbled to be moving in such august company.

To avoid any confusion, I can confirm that the new biography of Herbert Fowler was published on April 1st, in spite of what Waterstones have been saying to the contrary. If the person who was told this could correct Waterstones, they would be doing me a very great favour - Many thanks!

In fact, if Waterstones need any further proof of the book's existence, they could check this out with the 225 people who have already purchased the book.

The reality is that it has been priced on a not for profit basis, so the moment we gave any book-seller a discount, we would be losing money.

Congratulations on completing the book!

They are a lot harder to finish than they are to start.

Philip,
Welcome. I am the person who had the bollix with Waterstones. I just sent an e-mail to their customer service agent.

I recommend acquiring a copy of this book. It doesn't just provide fascinating details and tidbits about WHF and his work but also provides a lovely time capsule of life from the latter decades of the 19th Century until WWII.

I received mine today and have paged through it, looks informatively written and wonderfully illustrated.  Anything Philip Truett does is absolutely top-notch.  Congratulations to Philip and Derek Markham!

Although Herbert Fowler had been to the US before, on his way back to the UK from Australia a few decades earlier, when he travelled there again in 1913 he went on the 'Mauretania' from Liverpool to NY and it took 6 days.

And he would have arrived to find a NY that looked a bit like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZ1OgQL9_Cw
How times have changed, and not just in golf, in the 100 or so years since.
