I wonder if similar drainage plans are of public record in county courthouses? I've never looked into it, but "waters of the state" laws might require it in some cases, for the same reasons that drawings of easements are often recorded.


Any of you real estate lawyers have any thoughts on that? If such drainage plans are recorded, county level real estate records are an overlooked source of information on old golf courses.

The last course that Seth Raynor designed was Mid Pacific CC (aka Kailua CC), which he planned during his Dec. 1925 trip to Hawaii.  Although only 9 holes were built, the plan called for 18.  Here's a map of the 18 hole course from the Jan. 23, 1927 edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Municipal Golf Course - Donald Ross nine - plan says 1920 - club website says  inc'ed in 1935, opened in '39, and that Russell Breeden added 9.  Did the club take over the 'muni' (Depression?) in '35, add the nine, and then open as Lancaster Golf Club in '39?

Doing some research on Ross recently, I was struck with how many visits he made to cities in connection with site inspections for municipal courses. Along the way there were newspaper articles about his visit and the city officials he met with (press coverage he was less likely to get with private clubs).Ross really got around.

Here's a 1912 routing map of the 18 holes at Brooklawn from 1912.  This is essentially the routing that Tillinghast walked into in 1929, except the hole labeled 16 here was moved to the pond sometime between 1912 and 1919. 



And here is that 1912 routing laid over the 1934 aerial.  Sorry for the eye test. But you can see how Tillinghast moved things around.

Thanks for posting the 1912 layout of Brooklawn.  I have never seen that before.  It appears that holes 3-10 are very similar to today's routing.  I remember several years ago Jim Kennedy posted a picture of what is today's ninth green (prior to Tillinghasts work) and it looked much like the same setting as today.  I like to see how the old courses have evolved over time.  It's very helpful when the old layout is superimposed on the old.  Thanks for sharing these.
