Why no Dornoch or TOC?

Too expensive these days.  Massive green fee hikes in recent years.

This is a pretty old thread, I'd be curious to know if personal opinions have risen or fallen post reno / resto for the courses that have had them.

Until it changes tonight.

Lahinch
CPC
NB
PH2
Somerset Hills
Ballyneal
Woking
Pasatiempo
St. George’s Hill
Bandon Trails
Swinley Forest
Friar’s Head
Primland
PD
Golspie
Mid Pines
The Island Club
Brora
Elie
RD
Pine Needles
Ballybunion Old
Streamsong Blue
Waterville
Kilspindie

In order of my enjoyment in playing the course, not my assessment of architectural merit (although there is a pretty strong correspondence). For example, there are several courses superior to Golspie, Elie, and Kilspindie, but those are just so darn fun to play. I also have a bias toward MP and PN because we have played them the most frequently. Toughest to leave off: Streamsong Red, Ridgewood, Old Mac, Crail Balcomie, and Hope Valley (too much home club bias for HV to include).

To answer Cal’s question, Somerset, Ballyneal, Friar’s Head, SS Blue are all new plays in the past year. Woking moved up because I find myself replaying in my head frequently. Primland moved up because we do not go there because staying there has become outrageously expensive, but I find myself missing the course—unique architecture and maybe the most aesthetically compelling course that is not on the water.

Btw, for those of you who like rankings, top100courses released their new Top 100s for Scotland, Ireland, and England about 10 days ago. St. Patrick’s busted into the Big 5 in Ireland.

What makes a course abbreviation worthy?

Lol to both. Abbreviations are easier to type and use them for courses frequently abbreviated here so people know them.

JK, I know of your lack of warm and fuzzy for Pasa. I should have abbreviated it.

Twin Dolphin is really good. Todd did an excellent job there. I haven't seen Diamante or several of the other contenders so I'm not able to say whether it's the best course in Cabo, but it is very good.

Here's my write up on the course from 2019:

Bart,

Ya know what.....after second thought you got me :)  In all seriousness I was sitting next to my wife on the couch while I was making my list and once she realized I was back on that "golf website" I felt like an opposing pitcher coming into Yankee Stadium to trying to close out a game.

I agree that Greywalls is a better golf course thank Black Lake and I will never forget when my buddies and I played it and the driver from the pro shop to the first tee.....we all had huge smiles on our faces.  Greywalls is extremely unique and a must play for anyone in the area.

With that being said Black Lake is one of my all time favorites.  I just love how secluded the courses is and I have yet to play a course that is cut so privately into as thick of forest as Black Lake is.  I also love the "Detroit" feel of the course.  My grandparents lived in the city of Detroit and so did my mother and when I see the local UAW workers up there enjoying some of the finer things in life it reminds me of old school Detroit.  So its probably more about the feel of Black Lake than the course itself if that makes sense.

I also looked at my list again and have decided to make a new addition :)  I blame this on my wife and the evil eye she was giving me while I was cranking out my top 25 :)

I will say I do love courses on water as they just give me a euphoric feeling while playing but there is now way a Bay Harbor can be ranked better than Kingsley.  I hope to be retired in 10 years or so and my goal is to someday be a member at Kingsley Club.  That course stole my heart.  Hopefully someday soon I will be able to jump back on that amazing track :)

So here is my new Top 25 Course list

1.  Bandon Dunes
2. Pacific Dunes
3.  Sheep Ranch
4. Whistling Straits
5. Kingsley Club
6. Bandon Trails
7. Old Mac
8. Mammouth Dunes
9. Sand Valley
10. Arcadia Bluffs
11. Erin Hills
12.  Oakland Hills South
13. Greywalls
14. Streamsong Red
15. Streamsong Blue
16. Bay Harbor
17. Forest Dunes
18. Belvedere
19. Black Wolf Run
20. The Loop
21. Black Lake
22. Treetops Signature
23. Angels Crossing
24. Dunes Club
25. Lost Dunes

With that being said I feel solid about my top 10 but after that it gets very hard....not an easy task :)  But I do agree...I like Greywalls better than Black Lake
