Call me crazy, but I say the difference between the two courses, in terms of aesthetics, shot variety, and spectating, is night and day.  Better looking and more entertaining.

I'd say the big difference in golf design is the incredibly well positioned and shaped bunkers and gathering slopes into and away from the bunkers, setting up green approaches or greensides.  There aren't bunkers built just willy nilly for the sake of sprinkling them about the course.  They all have a great relavance to the course of play.  CK is shaped as artistry, while KC is sort of commercial shaping and grading, IMHO.

Is the punchbowl green concept too easy for pros?  I'm not advocating not designing them, but they appear to have their way with it watching the final group come up #18.  Their margin of error is too small for a hole location that funnels everything in.

For me - it is perfect because I usually miss the bowl anyway!

OK rush to judgment on my part.  Apparently the same slopes that make the approach shots too easy make the putts too hard for these guys...

I was thinking along the same lines.  I love punchbowl greens.  But, Is a punchbowl green somewhat of a wrong type green for a finishing hole?

I'd also like to know if John Kirk is picking up any sort of vibe of similarity to what he sees here on CK's green complexes and bunker relationships and placements to BallyNeal.  It seems to me that the bunker shaping and style of smaller pots bored into the hillsides at a sort of angle into the higher well contoured green sites reminds me a bit of Bally.

I don't know if I can determine whether a green is right/wrong based on 4 of the best players in the world playing it one day a year.  Especially when 2 of them are absolutely on fire.  For a resort course, or any course for that matter, I think it can lead to some memorable shots that turn out better than they should've for the rest of us hacks.

I'll post frame grabs of 16 thru 18 later.

For me, the only way the broadcast could have been better was if Renton Laidlaw and his trusty sidekick (I forget his name, Warren Humphreys?) were doing the commentary.  Heck, throw in Steve Williams too as I think he was very serviceable.

That's a very good question.  I think you are probably right but bunker placement and orientation was not one of the similarities I focused on.  I'm sure Tom has specific philosophies regarding bunkers, some of which he is happy to share.

#13 has similarities with #11 at Pacific Dunes.  About the same length, green higher in back, deep bunker left catching errant shots.

I focused on the general aesthetic appeal of the shaping, and I especially focused on the way the ball rolled around.  More than any other characteristic, I think Tom has refined the beauty of a rolling ball better than other modern architects.  In the last hour, both Anthony Kim and Hunter Mahan shook their heads, smiled, and said "Wow."  Nothing beats a Doak course for watching the ball roll.

And perhaps only I would find it funny that NBC would show tape of Snedeker's putt at the Ryder Cup in an upverted SD fashion, when it was originally broadcast in HD!

    I like the fact that the course looks playable for the high to mid handicapper. It speeks very well of Tom Doak that he resisted placeing bunkers all over this course. He provided landing areas that are truly fair for golfers of different levels of abilities. Well done.

NBC can't be happy about the erosion of their views due to your frame grabs...  :)

The no collars look great.
The infinity hole demonstrated what Tom was talking about the other day - not seeing anything behind the green - even the collar.

Tom - what was most difficult about the site?
Those are some long bridges -- $$.
Very cool that they also said 1/2 the price of Kauri and 1/2 the maint budget.
