Somewhat OT -- golfing on Election Day
« on: November 04, 2008, 11:06:54 AM »
In my previous life as a daily newspaper reporter, it made little sense to show up for work on Election Day before 6 p.m. Then we'd work like heck to get in all the election results before the 1 a.m. deadline.

Ergo, several of us ink-stained types -- joined by our fellow pols of all stripes -- would head to the links on Election Day to enjoy a round of golf. I actually found it a good way to get away from all the sturm and drang of the campaigns, and enjoy the company of folks I worked with and wrote about.

I've golfed on Election Day when it was snowing. Today, on Election Day in Wisconsin, it's headed for 73 degrees and a light breeze out of the south. I'm headed for the tee right now. Anyone else?

Like I said on an earlier thread..I am going and have purchased a half-pint of Maker's for the round because liquor is not to be served when the polls are open in the state where I will be playing.

Got my chops in yesterday....today the weather is downright abysmal.

But, I'll be drinking at home tonight too, as they have the same no-booze laws here in Utah.

Phil,
I was on Greenock CC's (Donald Ross 9 holer in Lee, Ma.) first tee at 10:30 this morning w/ abuddy of mine. For those who've never been there it's a fun-to-play example of his work.
Robert Decker, the Super and sometime poster on this site, does a good job of keeping the place in order. The greens today were firm, smooth and true-rolling, plus it looks like he has been expanding them in some places. They're really tricky surfaces that sometimes look like they'll break quite a bit, and then don't, and vice versa (frustrating as hell, but less so on the second go-round, thankfully).

Bonus day in SW Massachusetts, around 63 degrees, with thin clouds and very little wind.

edit: I forgot to mention, this course is public and is only a few miles off the Mass Pike(Lee exit).

I played nine holes at the Marovitz muni on the lake here in Chicago on a beautiful 70 degree day...hard to beat this weather in the midwest in November

I would have voted today had it not been cold and raining in North Carolina. I see nothing wrong with it. BTW, its not illegal to serve alcohol in NC while the polls are open.

I wish I could have played golf today, it was truly a bonus day here in MA.

However, I am playing Beechtree (first and last round) and ACCC this weekend.  ;D
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

45 minutes in line at the polls, FIVE HOURS on the course.  Only one of those was worth the wait.  Guess which one...

Based on the CAPS on the five hours, I'd say only the 45 minutes was worth it. Its never worth it to me to spend 5 hours on the golf course.

15 minutes at the polls, then a 3 3/4 hour round in which I played better than I have in 2 months.  Too bad that good feeling will probably be gone by 11pm.

Phil,

I didn't realize you were a former newspaper hack. I have just joined the ranks of recovering newspaper hacks.

I have played a couple of times in recent years on election day here in Minneapolis. Could have played today, but was in the office of my new job. I did play Sunday and it was great. I'm afraid it might be my last Minnesota round of '08.

My darling wife took the kids to the polling station with her so that I could golf today. I reward her by coming home half cut with delusions of grandeur after 4 birdies and a 74 which I won't shut up about (It's been slim pickings this year). Hopefully I'll sober up for MSNBC.

I joined two pals at the turn and got 9 in.  After my last drive (home) I'm enjoying my margarita.  I'm a fan of early voting.

A truly great day.  Four birdies from the blacks and when Obama was declared the winner of Pennsylvania I put $100 on black and won.  I can feel many more great things coming from this election.  Congrats to everyone who golfed and voted on this wonderful day.

I played both yesterday and today, gotta take advantage of temps in the 70s in November because the weather is going to take a big turn later this week!

I didn't even think about the fact it was election day while I was playing, honestly.  I'd already voted last week.  Perhaps it accounts for how few people were out on the course today.

That, or the fact that it was windy and despite the fact they'd apparently been clearing up leaves as recently as yesterday our group probably spent the better part of an hour searching for balls (no one was behind us)  Despite all the searching I lost two, I think our foursome lost a total of six!

Yesterday was a perfect day, as I was lucky to be at Shinnecock....the best I have seen on this side of the pond.
Got home at 8pm and never turned on the TV.
