Aerial of the Day #185 (and 186) - 30 Aug 2002
« on: August 30, 2002, 06:22:01 AM »
I might not be around much today, as I might head out for a
round of golf (my original plans changed, and I never got to
play on Wednesday, either), so for the first one, you all will
have to help with the clues, which shouldn't be too hard.
The second one is hard and I should have another guest clue-
giver to help today (and reveal).

The first one will raid and pillage your score if your game
isn't completely on:

The stumper almost sounds like a foreign remote golf
destination, where you might find a good ale.

I can't make out the second one very well.  I might need to borrow an eyepiece from the first course! ;)

Hello,

I'm your guest clue giver on course #2 today.  I'm not the best at this but let's try to "rock" on.

The fact that I'm giving the clues might pinpoint the architect of the course.

I am more than willing to also "invite" other clues by those who figure it out.

I'll post some other clues a little later and reveal the course at 2 Eastern time.

#1 is often considered the toughest amongst several very
tough courses in this golf hotbed.  In fact, it's easy to
misspell this golf hotbed area.  ;)

#2 is located in a town by the same name as the location of a top 10 U.S. course.

If you miss it on a few holes on #1, it's
"Ice Ice Baby"!

Did you post this course for that LeeH guy?

Take a run along that road to the left of the first course
and you will have run about 65% of a marathon.

Robert Lewis Stevenson would be proud of this course desgined by a famous tri-named architect.

#1 is easy enough, but I need more clues on 2.  Unless 2 is that neighboring course
to the top 10 course mentioned in said town of same name.  But, I believe we already had that one as AOTD,
so it must not be 'that one'. ???

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

#2 sometimes can drive someone off of a "Cliff."

Our own DG's Matt Cohn has played this course.
And I believe Jeff Brauer may have done some work here under the umbrella of another architect.

The PGA tour did visit this course briefly in the 1950s and one of the winners was Julius Boros.

William,

Nope.  Wrong architect but many do get these two confused.

The town for #2 is the same named town, but not the same
town, as a top 10 course.

Chris gave a big clue as to the architect, who likes his coffee
in his home.

The course is also one Chris is familiar with, depending on
how much you read on this web site.

As for the name, look at my first clue in the original post.
Put two words together in that post for a bigger clue going
along with the "sounds like a remote golf destination".

As for #1, I was not responding to anything LeeH posted.
This was in the plans for some time, despite Mike Nuzzo
doing a neighboring course a few weeks ago.

Looks like snow on the left side of the course.

How about 600 yards of fun to start your round?

William's Ross clue refers to something else, not Ross
himself as the architect.  Think pre-U.S.

chris,

i didn't mean that ross was the archie of #2 only that he
might get kinda nostalgic over the sound of its name.

Much like the Crump Cup, the Wilson, and the Travis,
there is an annual amateur tournament at this course
named after the architect. A better comparison, for the actual
type of amateur player is the Tillinghast, held every year
at Quaker Ridge.

Huckaby would have something to say about #1, but he's
away on another golf trip.  Just don't start any fires out
there, Tom!

Gib would have something to say, but I haven't seen him
post anywhere on GCA in quite some time.  Anybody know
his whereabouts?  Work keeping him busy?

For #1, the architect's son built a neighboring course that
gets a bad rap, due to the course it replaced in the "Clam
Bake" rotation.

YAPCR clue for #2:  Did the architect use his Silver Hammer
during construction?

By the way Scott, in analyzing #1 the question is,
"Is it half empty or half full?" And isn't there a game you play with kids that is apropos of #1?

And yes, the Huckster is in my jurisdiction. Sadly, he's
too busy to play golf with the likes of me... :(

Course #2 is Dornick Hills in Ardmore, Oklahoma by Perry Maxwell.

The clues are

Good ale = Rich Goodale, sometime poster, who frequents Royal Dornoch which sounds almost like Dornick.  Also this is where the Donald Ross connection comes in.

rock = Dornick is gaelic for little rocks

invite = Dornick Hills hosts tha annual college tournament the Maxwell Invitational

the town clue refers to Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania

"Cliff" refers to the most famous hole on the course, #16 is known as the Cliff hole.

Matt Cohn plays for the University of Oklahoma who plays annually in the Maxwell Invite.

I believe Jeff Brauer worked for Dick Nugent during a renovation of the course in 85.

I'm not sure about the Silver Hammer thing, but I seldom get the YAPCR hints.

More information about the club and course is available at their web site

www.dornickhills.net

Also, the course was written about briefly in a column about Maxwell's courses on this site entitled Designer of the Great Plains.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer is a Beatles' song.

#1 is Spyglass Hill, in Pebble Beach (I assume), CA, by
Rober Trent Jones, Sr.  "The Glass" is owned by Pebble Beach
Resorts, and is a sister course of Pebble Beach, among
others.  SH is one of the 3 courses that host the "Crosby
Clam Bake", the AT&T Pro-Am.

"raid and pillage", "aye, matey", "eyepiece", "RL Stevenson"
all refer to Stevenson's "Treasure Island", where the name
comes from.

Culp and Cosby starred in the 60's TV show "I, Spy"

misspelled golf hotbed = "Monterey" (see Tee-shirt thread)

65% marathon = bordering 17-mile drive, at left of aerial.

"snow" is sand dunes on holes 2-5.

starts with 600 yard monster par 5.

Mike Nuzzo did nearby Pacific Grove a few weeks ago.

Huckaby and Gib are from the Bay area, north of the
Monterey peninsula.

here's the layout (upside down):

and pics of #4:

Thanks to Chris for the assistance!  Rain washed out my golf
plans yet again today.  I strongly suggest reading his
Maxwell piece, which includes detailed info on Dornick Hills,
in addition to more famous courses such as Southern Hills
and Prairie Dunes.
