New Golf Course on Martha's Vineyard?
« on: October 18, 2002, 06:35:36 AM »
Today's NY Times has an interesting article on the possible development of a new golf course on Martha's Vineyard, with all the socio-economic baggage that entails. You can find it at:
Maybe someone out there knows how to link to to this site.

Don't miss that story, guys. It's a doozy.

What this Kupersmith fella needs to do, if he wants this thing approved, is to offer a Charter Membership to Martha Burk.

Or, hell, make it an women-only club!

"golf is a cultural steamroller" - that is a doozy.  is golf getting a bad rap here or just golf which caters to the high end?  would this course be approved if it was run as a muni?

Corey is actually a very nice guy, and is not nearly the prick that he is made out to be in this article. I can also guarantee you that he did not spend $30 mm in cash, and that $110 million was at the top of the market in paper not cash. However, it a difficult battle against the local politics in beach town, as Bob Rubin of The Bridge can attest to.

I'm sure Corey is a nice enough guy, but if he was smarter he wouldn't get himself (or his employees) quoted in the NYT "calling for retributions, lawsuits, etc...) All this accomplishes is further entrenching the local board and their interests.

Not very constructive!

slapper,

His real mistake was that he walked into a meeting without knowing the vote count beforehand. Rookie mistake that cost him.

One short passage from the article:

" 'A golf course is the epitome of suburban leisure and affluence,' said James Athearn, a commission member from Edgartown who voted against the new course. He described golf as a cultural steamroller crushing 'the character and identity that we are trying to preserve.'

"Linda Sibley, a commission member from West Tisbury, said golf 'enhances the habitat for very ordinary suburban birds.' "

How's that for a new wrinkle in the Case Against Golf: It enhances the habitat for the WRONG KINDS OF BIRDS!

What a country.

Bingo!

Couldn't agree more, a rookie developer mistake. He easily could have had another person there. He also made the mistake of making threats pre-approval....guess we'll see what happens from here.
