Matt:  that makes sense, but I've given up tilting at windmills.  Maybe I'm tired... Maybe it's just too daunting.  There are so many of "them" and so few of "us"... Zagat's adding to this is beyond the last straw for me, but it doesn't help.  We have so little ammo and they have so much...

Sorry to be so sad, so resigned.  But for every Rustic Canyon there seem to be 15 Pelican Hills.  I give up.

Huck;

Chin up!  If nothing else, we can commiseryate over the State of the golf architecture in the Union over a couple of brews in a few short months.

Just think...the next great course is still to be built!   ;D

Thanks, Mike.  When I see you, at least it will be at one of the good ones!  And another excuse to drink... well... yahoo!

Tom H:

Just to let you know I have a few media friends who are giving serious thought to crank up a California golf guide that will be a "no holds barred" analysis of golf in the state -- including profiles on key people and events / local & state tournaments. It will attempt to be similar to what we try to do at Jersey Golfer.

Do you see a market for such a publication?

Matt:  hell yes - we really have nothing of the sort.  There is a local publication (for which I had a story published) called Golf Today magazine, but it's mainly advertorials, you know - a critical word has never graced its pages.  If you're talking down and dirty a la the original Confidential Guide (note I've never seen Jersey Golfer but I gather you are at least toward that side of things) then well, you have no competition here.  I'd say people will pay attention to it just for the difference!

Tom H:

Do you see a "statewide" pub being of interest versus one geared towards say SoCal or NoCal? I think they are leaning to one for SoCal because the markets are different.

FYI -- e-mail me your home or business address and I'll send you a few back copies of Jersey Golfer.

Matt:  I'd say statewide would work - we're not that huge and there is so much in-state travel.  But I'm sure your guys know this much better than I... I do know that one focused only on NorCal would likely miss a lot... Perhaps SoCal has enough to keep them occupied, who knows?
