Visual Architectural Quiz II
« on: February 25, 2004, 07:55:45 PM »
Remember this is only for fun, just give it your best guess.
Like good golf holes, some are intentionally easy, and a few are very hard. The hard ones are because of how many of you study between tests ;D

Architects By Sight

1. Architect #1, a personal favourite

2. Architect #2, he left many great coures in quite a few countries

3. someone more modern, but still had style

4. A rising new talent, a damn fine drinking company

Drawings of the Architects
this was to show you some of the old types

5. One to warm you up

6. Another because even his drawings are famous

7. A green to test your skill, but still well known

8. Another green, the architect can be guessed from the design

9. Now a tough one, great architect who is not well known, but should be.

Actual Features

10. We will start easy with a famous bunker

11. Who designed this hole, the picture is from the 20's.

12. This may be a little tougher than the last.

13. A well known and famous architect who strangely is rarely discussed on this site.

If you got the last one, you must spend more time than Tom Paul on golf architecture.

I had a momentary flash of integrity here, and realized that #3 is the late Joe Lee.

After finally looking at what the architect actually drew on #7, this is the first I have ever seen it this paticular drawing of a somewhat modified Eden!

Ian, why didn't you post this on the Eden thread!

That is not only the late Joe Lee, but he is standing front of Royal Montreal's clubhouse, if I am not wrong.

Every answer is there, as the PGA would say. "These guys are good" I'll confirm the answers late tonight. I appreciate a couple of notes about these drawings that came on IM, a few of you know some extra details.

Tom & SPDB,

I'm smiling, from this too. I am learning who actually did the drawings that we see, and (more enjoyably) that some work was actually not done by who you thought it was.

Again, I will share my answers including information that was passed on to me.

I reckon some were cheating with a "right click" on the image+"properties" (I mean, who's actually visited Moor Park on this thread!)  :D

Ian, is that the 3rd on Moor Park High?  Where did you get that pic from?  Bunkers don't look much like that now.

Answers

1-William Flynn
2-Willie Park Jr.
3-Joe Lee at Royal Montreal (despite record itis his design and not Dick Wilsons)
4-David Kidd at Bandon Dunes
5-Billy Bell Sr (plan for Thomas but drawn by Bell). I wasn't trying to be tricky with this one, the fact of Bell producing Thomas's drawings came from Tommy N.
6-Donald Ross, actually the 7th at Oak Hill, but great guess Chris
7-Dr. A. MacKenzie and it is indeed the Eden hole at the Meadow Club
8. William Gordon (mistakenly thought to be Maxwell even by the source, corrected by Mr Chris Clouser).

From Chris, "Maxwell was at Saucon Valley in 1944 and did work on two holes on the Old Course.  The drawings in the book are actually from 1951 and were done by Gordon as part of the design work on the Grace Course.  Maxwell was not involved with that project." Thanks Chris.

9-Langford, as noted in a guess this is in Geoff's Golden Age book. I just wanted a mixture of architects.
10-Devil's Asshole in one of its various forms
11-Colt's Moor Park, and Mr. Turner you are my hero, it is the 3rd hole.
12-As many guessed this is Mackenzie's 8th at Moortown
13-Tom MacWood, I truly admire your prowess as a researcher. I thought Hawtree was far enough off the radar to fool everyone. This is the 15th at Lickey Hills by Hawtree, his son called this one of the best examples of his work.

Very impressed with the knowledge, and I appreciate all the honest guesses (as opposed to "right clicking" to genius).

I hope everyone enjoyed this, I thought the different drawings would be fun placed together. Thanks for help from Chris and Tommy. If anyone has an photos or ideas to continue this, send me an IM.

The Oak Hill one is not even on the East course. It is the current sixteenth on the West Course. The cross bunkers have been replaced by mounds, and the long hitter must carry some large trees to reach the green in two.

JNC,

"It is the current sixteenth on the West Course"

The book said it was the 7th from the west. Could the nines have been reversed?

Hawtree and Taylor went nuts with bunkers on some courses.  Early photos of Ifield (!) and Grims Dyke look somewhat like your pic.

Great post,

Now, what is the over-under for the average of the answers of the following questions for the archie buffs who got so many right?

1. How much money have you spent on golf books?
2. How many books do you have?
3. Are you divorced? :)

Just wondering what kind of resources I need to attain this kind of enlightenment.

Ian Andrew,

Yes, the nines have been reversed, probably for the better.
The hole is very pivotal in a close match. Several strokes can change hands here.
