Visual Golf Architecture Quiz - The answers!
« on: February 19, 2004, 11:12:17 PM »
A fun quiz to test your knowledge

Name the course worker......he may look very familiar

Look at the routing and tell me what course this is.

Speaking of routings, this plan is a section of what early routing for this famous course?

Who is the architect on the right of this picture?
(bonus points for the architect on the left working with him)

Who's did this working drawing (all his plans are in this format)?

This picture is from 1933, the course is one of the world's best, who was the architect, and what course is this from?

Who did these great old bunkers?

Who did this great modern bunker?

Have some fun, give your answers, I'm sure all mysteries will be solved before the week-end.

Ian - I sent my answers to you privately. I'd post them here, but I'm still in AOTD mode, and don't want anyone else's fun to be ruined.

OK, I'll give it a go without any research.
1) I don't know, but will guess that is Ian Andrew :)
2) I really don't know.  My first guess was Friars Head, but I don't think so with closer look.
3)  I have no idea, but it looks awfully awkward.
4)  Bob Cupp on the right, and Doug Carrick, the Canadian for
the extra credit (I need it)
5)  Donald Ross drawing
6)  George Thomas course, either Los Angeles CC or BelAir CC
I am going to guess Bel Air CC.   I get them mixed up! :)
7)  McKenzie bunkering
8)  Coore and Crenshaw bunker

There are lots of right answers between these and Seans IM. I'll wait till the week-end and post them.

I'm impressed with a few of the correct responses.

Last Picture:
Mike Strantz does bunkering like that also, with a particular resemblance to the short 14th at Bulls Bay.

#6 was the real shocker for me, and I thought I had it.
The answer is going to make Tommy N. blush, of that much I assure you.

I figured #6 was out West judging from the mountains and trees, but I wasn't sure if it was Thomas or Fowler. And still don't know.

#8 looks like one of the bunkers at French Creek, Hanse's new course in Elverson, PA.

I'd be cheating to answer #2, considering it was one of my
AOTDs, sent to me by Ian.

#8, not French Creek, but I'll guess Boston Golf Club, by Hanse?

#6 is a nice little uphill par 3, where the tee box of the club's
most famous par 3 is just to the right - that Michael Miller
saw fit to paint.  About 400 yards NW of here (not around
during the picture) is some serious jiggling.

#1 can't be TE Paul.  For one thing he would never wear a lime green "gimmie" cap, and for another, he always has his manservants rake his traps for him.  I think it is Andy Willaims.

I don't pretend to know any of the answers to these questions, but Ian, you've done a very nice job in presenting this quiz, and I hope you'll endeavor to put such efforts together again in the future!

Cheers,
Darren

I'm smiling becuse there is no question as a collective this would be solved in the hour. I appreciate the lack of cheating, since it would be very easy.

I wasn't sure whether this was too easy or to hard, but it looks like it was about right for this group.

I will start a couple of threads ON ARCHITECTURE from this.

1.Is indeed the one and only Tom Paul at Merion
2.For those of you going to the GCA outing at Banff, this is the course from the air
3.This is the first few holes at Pine Valley, with the origional location of the 5th
4.Bob Cupp, a great strategist, and Doug Carrick
5.Kudos to MacWood for recognizing the style, it is indeed Walter Travis. Amazing how much Travis, Thomas and Ross all did there drawings in a similar style.
6. 15th hole at LA Counbtry Club, by Thomas. Picture is 1933
7.These are as many have guessed Stanley Thompson bunkers, the 12th at St. George's in Toronto
8.The final one is from the 16th hole at French Creek, some of the best detailed work I have seen

I'll follow this is up with a couple of threads from this. Hope this was enjoyed.

Sean, I agree, I should be hiding my head and shame, and I got an email from Jim Wagner this morning pretty much letting me know of my gaff!

Ian, When I was originally looking at the picture of LACC #15, I thought it was that hole, but the trees were telling me different, I didn't see any pine trees or at least what looked like pine trees in there, and took it for a course back East!

As far as the Travis drawing, I thought of Travis too, but never knew he did that style of drawing. However, the strategies looked like Travis to me. What a great three shot hole this is! (Two shot for most today)

Ian, I totally concur with Darren. This should be at least a once a week thing!

Tommy -
I thought it was #7 at Crystal Downs.

As far as the drawing, I was certain it was Ross as it was consistent with the medium in which he rendered holes. The only thing that gave me pause was the hole itself.

Ian - what hole is that?

I'll follow this up with a current photo of LA CC 15th and I'll confirm the hole from Cherry Hills in Fort Erie, Ontario (near Buffalo)

I'll have to check the archives to see if another week is possible.
