My son's first round....a thank-you to the site
« on: February 18, 2004, 07:44:41 PM »
This is a thank-you to all who have encouraged me to take my son out to play now, rather than waiting till he is older.

I’m very lucky that my son seems to want hang around with his old man at the golf course. I have been surpassingly reluctant to encourage him, since this is the source of my bond with my father. Simply put, I became a golfer (and then a golf architect) because I inherited my father’s love for the game. Once I realised that he really wanted to play, and that it had nothing to do with pleasing me, I was excited about taking him to play golf.

The biggest question I had was how? Last fall many of you sent me suggestions. With the encouragement of Gene in particular, he said simply “just take him to the course and play”. The advice was to let him tee up anything he wanted to, let him pick up to keep up with play, but make him hit every chip and putt. What great advice.

Dad and I took Cam out to the local muni for a lesson. Cam was carrying his very first set of clubs, that we had bought to fit to him properly. I must say that the equipment manufacturers have created lines of cheaply price junior clubs of real quality. I think this is one group that has done its part to help promote future golfers.

My father is a good teacher, who wanted to make sure that he had a good swing before we even considered taking him out. He struggled for a while, as we made subtle correction to his grip and posture, until he proceeded to hit the ball regularly in the air with a nice swing. Before you worry about me, I have no interest in a competitive golfer, I just want to play golf with my son.

He hit the ball well enough and consistent enough that we decided to play. It was a nice quiet Tuesday afternoon at the muni, and there was nobody on the tee of one of the three nines. Perfect let’s go! We went into the pro shop and said we wanted to play nine holes. At the local municipal course we were told “he’s too young to play”

My dad said “there’s nobody out there and he hits the ball fine, besides he’s with us and we’ll pick up to keep up.” They said NO, there are too many regulars (ie seniors) who play at this time. I paid for a twosome in silence.

Needless to say, I stuffed Cam’s clubs in the side of my bag, and Dad and I went out as a twosome “with a caddie.” We played the first hole as a twosome and the rest he played without picking up.

I can not possibly describe the joy of watching both my father and son play. It was the first round where I can not remember a single stroke of my own, but I remember every chip, putt and duff of both in detail. My father began the day slightly worried about holding people up, but by the middle of the round was smiling and laughing at each of Cam’s shots. Surpassingly he hit some great shots.

The great lesson I learned from this (and from people on this site) was that my son was ready to play at 9. I had stupidly thought that 14 was about the “right” age to start. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The other thing I have also discovered is that finding a place where he is accepted to play is very difficult. The first tee program is great unless it isn’t in your city (like us). My biggest problem is places that will allow him to play. I’m personally lucky that a couple of private club (clients) have encouraged me to bring him out “late” this year. This left me thinking of the other young public players and what alternatives they have. I think this may be golf’s biggest challenge.

Anyway, thanks to the people on this site that encouraged this day to take place, it was simply the best day of golf I have had…..so far!

Great story but I have a question that you can forward to the pro at the local "muni", do they have a rule for players that are "too old"?

You might want to give the pro-shop a picture of your son's swing and it should compare favorable to many of the "regulars" swings and results.

Congrats ...

Ian,
Great post; thank you for sharing it with us.  Beautiful moments, indeed.  Wait until you play your first father-son event; you'll nearly die from happiness!

A.G._Crockett,

I have, but I look forward to the one where I'm the father.

In the first one I played in, I hit a ball into a deep ugly bunker that was an impossible escape and said to my Dad "that's for making me cut wood after every hangover"

he couldn't get it and buried it in his footprint and said "that's for getting drunk in the first place"

Our playing partners were howling because this was the first hole. We always had fun when we played together as opposed to the grinding that went on when we played each other.

Ian,

Is this the Dad that couldn't make it out to California a couple of years back due to poor health?

He looks great now. Give him my best wishes.

Bob

p.s.  Ian, whatever you do, don't take pity on him and let him beat you before he is able. I suffer enough now that my youngest hits it by me by eighty or more yards off the tee. Stay top dog for as long as possible.

Great post Ian.  Gives me something to look forward to with my 3 boys (8,5 and 2).  Our local 9-holer permits kids to play after taking an etiquette and basic skills test.  In the meantime, they enjoy blasting balls at the range.  We go through a LOT of balls in no time flat.

Though I had already heard this story firsthand from Ian upon his return back to lovely Scarborough from sunny Florida, it made me smile again when I read it (and not just the spelling and grammar).

All I know is that:

a) Offering a stroke a hole to Ian's dad, even though he is well into his 70s and I play to a low single, is too much. Offering five strokes aside to Ian is fine, especially if you've ever seen the way he plays the final three holes.

b) Ian has really thought about how to introduce Cam (his son) to this remarkable sport, which is probably more than most parents do. I know that while Cam is not about to be pushed into anything, but, if he wants, his father can offer some great insights into architecture and the history of the game.

Well done, Mr. Andrew.

Bob,

Yes it was my dad. At one point I thought I was going to end up coming your way this winter and my Dad had told me to pass on his thanks and best wishes to you if we ever met. I was hoping to buy you the dinner that somebody else owed you.  ;)

Kevin,

Sounds like you have a great situation there.

Robert,

You should have mentioned that I beat you 11 and 7 ;D the day I lost all four wheels with three to play.

Jeff M,

Are you calling me ugly? Is that why Ran removed my photo from the top left. ;D

Give a guy a compliment and he has to bring up ancient history... However, in Kingston they are still speaking of the "collapse of 2003," in hushed tones.

Ian,
By starting him at nine, you have guaranteed that he will be beat you by 14, so maybe it was not a wise decision...

Now we have a fourth when Mingay bails.

Fantastic stuff and thanks for sharing it, Ian.  If there is
a "soul of GCA" ,then this thread exhibits it.

Interesting ESP going on also.. I took my own son out
for his very first round ever on Monday, I too have a lot
of pictures, and I was debating whether or not to
show them here.  Now I may just be emboldened to do
so... My son is 5 and good lord did we have fun...

So if the site can stand some more pics, well.. stay tuned..

Ian...great stuff and a wonderful post.  My 5-year-old daughter got the "bug" this past summer and I have been "gently" introducing it to her even since.  She seems geared up this winter to get back out there and play some more...but she still loves hitting a bucket at the range then riding in a cart eating popcorn while watching dad play a few.  I'm hoping this year she actually gets out of the cart a bit more and plays a few in with me!

TH...aswesome on you as well, hope the "fever" is caught by the next generation and that you have a golfing parnter for life.

Great story and pictures. What could be more satisfying then introducing your son to the game and have your dad there to witness it!

Question from a geneticist- Are you adopted? Among you your dad and your son, only your dad is playing from the wrong side of the ball!  Go lefties  ;D

Indoor putting cup:  $5

(2) Rounds of Putt Putt golf:  $10

Hitting four buckets at the range:  $20

Playing golf on a "big" course with your son and Dad for the first time:

          PRICELESS!!!!!!

That's also how much  the top photo of Cam's follow thru outlined in shadow against the setting sun is worth.

As Ran used to say during the early years, "Good on ya", Ian and you , too, Cam!

(BTW, I also had the "caddy" ploy down to a science with short little clubs stuffed in my bag suddenly appearing  just as the pro shop disappeared from sight!)

Ian, great story, great pics.

Just one thing you didn't mention but was obvious to the group, your son's a SOUTHPAW!

Serious question coming from a fellow southpaw that plays everything lefthanded EXCEPT golf.  I throw left-handed, bat-left handed, eat left handed, everything lefty.

But for one reason or another, I am betting it was because my dad's cut down clubs were right handed, I learned to play the game right handed.  Now I know Nicklaus says this is actually the way to do it, but its always bothered me that I do everything else left handed, but have to golf right.

Is your son a natural lefty in everything?  Did you consider switching his golf game to right handed?

Just some thoughts

Tommy,

very funny.

J Mandel,

I'm a south paw too. We tried both a lot and he just was more comfortable hitting the ball left.

His brother is right handed so that we can have one normal child.
