JJSE:

I mean that you posted "nothing of the sort" about your time here in the Bay Area, looking to meet regular or irregular posters HERE, like you did re Palm Desert.  Of course there are obvious reasons why - as I say I am just trying to give you a bit of good-natured ribbing.  Please disregard the whole thing, as it sure isn't working!

Any other city courses out there with similar resumes?

JC:

I didn't read through yet to see what's been mentioned, but Francis A. Gross in Minneapolis may have hosted a PGA and Keller in St. Paul (actually a Ramsey County course and not city like Phalen down the street) hosted the St. Paul Tour stop.

Also, gotta at Braemar in Edina, Minnesota that hosted one Tour stop in the late 60s.  Dad tells me everyone but the big three showed up.

West Palm Beach CC by Dick Wilson, in the 1960's.

You beat me too it.  This is a course I used to play a lot when I lived in New York's 6th borough... South Florida

Adam - my interest is that I am in the process of writing an article on the history of Mount Pleasant.  While researching, I was surprised by the once extensive use of MP by the USGA and PGA.  I was wondering how many other munis had that kind of history.  As usual, the treehouse answered me in spades!

I got to thinking of why munis were once much more used as tournament venues.  The conclusion I can to is that in the 1940s and 1950s, the courses tournaments were contested on mattered less than they do today.  These were not big dollar events, there was no TV and very few writers and fans gave a hoot about golf course architecture.  The majority of the pros were just trying to eke out a living in dog-eat-dog tournaments.  Unlike today where beauty to the viewer's eye is so important, the courses of yesteryear were mostly just fields of play.

I think Crandon Park near Miami is a county course (once hosted a Senior event).

Obviously, Bethpage is a state park.

At the time of the tournament, they may not have been public, but they are now.

Cedar Crest in Dallas (1927 PGA)
Pecan Valley in San Antonio (1967?? PGA)

And since it is the week of the LA Open (it will always be the LA Open) maybe Geoff or Tommy N. can verify. At one time I thought that Lakewood (once part of the LA County munis) hosted a few LA Opens in the '30's or '40's.

I don't know how I would ever have been able to look into the past with any degree of pleasure or enjoy the present with any degree of contentment if it had not been for the extraordinary influence the game of golf has had upon my welfare.

Tanglewood Park near Winston-Salem, NC, is a county park and hosted the 1974 PGA Championship, as well as many years of the Senior Vantage Championship.

Scott,

I can't believe we didn't get Tanglewood sooner. Good catch.
