The reason I ask is that the picture is taken from a great height.  The only place where you can take photo like that is on the path on the way up to the 9th tee is it not?

I will bet you a pint at Painswick that it is the new eighth...

That Morris green site was abandoned by Simpson, but is on the current 8th hole, below and short of the current green site. Both holes play in the same direction, but today's hole is about 50 yards longer. Picture most likely taken from the medal tees on 9.

OK it could be the old, defunct, 8th in the foreground, so is that the 16th in the background?  Is there any sign of the bunker now?

(I thought it was taken high above the 15th green-not far from the 16th tee)

There is plenty of high ground above the 15th and 16th to take this picture from.  I think you might owe someone a pint.   ;)

Matter of fact, from the new 9th tee you could probably take this exact picture.

As Peter points out, I can't see that green in the foreground being the current 8th green.   But it certainly could be an older version of the 8th that Simpson abandoned.

I agree with Peter.  That is where the 8th hole is,  but a green that was substantially short of the current 8th green.  The green in the background is the current 16th.

The picture of that green looks like the area that is used as the fairway approach for the 8th.

That is what I mean I think that is taken form either path on the way up to the 9th tee or from somewhere near the current 9th tee.

Did you ever get my copy of the essay about Colt and did you ever get my e-mail with the contact details for Trevose?

My mate Geoff says the routeplan by Colt is very much in the style of MacKenzie....more proof that MacKenzie learnt more from Colt than many are willing to admit..
