Discount book shops... god bless 'em

Having spent a large portion of my beer money on amazon.co.uk trying to find all the best books on architecture, I'd like to share a brief moment I had today.

With "Golf Architecture..." on the way from amazon by the good doctor, I poppped in to a budget book store today on the way to the bus. What did I find? "Spirit of St.Andrews" for £4.99... Perfect condition and sandwiched in between random lifestyle and spiritual doctrine... arguably in good company but a great surprise all the same...

This on the back of finding "A view from the Rough" by Mike Klemme in a similar store for £2.99 about 18 months ago.

I guess the moral of this story is keep a look out in budget book shops, and as long as it isn't a coffee-table special you may find a real gem. Brightened up my day :)

Anyone had a similarly pleasing experience?

I once came across some golf books in a used book store in Lake Placid NY. My wife wondered if there would be anything in the Great Britain section about golf. I doubted it, but decided to humor her. Lo and behold St Andrews by Andrew Lang (only a few oblique references to golf and a plate of Old Tom Morris. The suprise was the bookplate of Charles Blair Macdonald. It was his personal copy and I picked it up for $5!
   Another one happened in Santa Barbara. There was a book about Byron Nelson, a limited edition, and signed by Nelson. There was no price in the book, so I went up to the counter to inquire. The guy started looking in the computer and other places and it was obvious from watching him he wasn't finding a price. He finally told me it cost $10. I quickly paid, looked to see if there were any more copies (there weren't) and scooted out the door with a big smile.

Ed must be the kind of serendipity.  Who else would show up at Sand Hills with an old golf shirt bearing the personal lable of one Severiano Ballesteros?

He is also quite generous, as the current owner of that shirt can attest.
