What's worth playing in the Pinehurst area?
« on: January 28, 2004, 12:00:21 PM »
Hey all: I have the opportunity to head to Pinehurst for a few days towards the end of March. Wondering which (aside from No.2) are worth playing? I've heard nice things about Fazio's reno on No. 4.... I'm trying to find a good cross-section for a couple of stories I want to write.

What about Tobacco Road? I know it is a course that polarizes many who play it into two camps (the love it or hate it types), but my understanding is that it is on the drive from Raleigh to Pinehurst.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I would recommend #7, it's about 2 miles away from #1, #2 & #4.

Ross:  Pinehurst #2, Pine Needles, Mid Pines, Southern Pines
Strantz: Tobacco Road
Fazio: Pinehurst #4
RJones: Pinehurst #7, Talamore

Let me know when you're going to be in Raleigh.  I might be at KPIII, but if not, I'd have you out at my club.

Robert- Play #2 FOR SURE,especially if you have not played it yet, it may be one of the best courses anywhere(hole#3,short 4 and hole #5 long 4 ,are two of the best contrasting par 4's  within a 3 hole sequence that I have ever witnessed), then see Mid Pines, Southern Pines(best VALUE) and Pine Needles. All Ross courses and still have great greens...#4 was redone after the  1999 US Open  by Fazio and I have played it both before and  after---it was my next favorite before the re-do and it still is now. All these courses have  a great FUN quotient....also if you stay at the resort, take advantage of playing #1 and #3. They still have  some wild greens.(and you don't pay the crazy upcharges!!  Mark

Robert - play Forest Creek.

Speaking of which, what do people know about the subsequent holes built there (don't know if 9 or 18 were added)

Pine Needles is one of my favorite Ross courses I've played and Mid Pines is excellent too (and less crowded).  But everyone should play #2 at least once just or the experience.  Those greens are unreal.  I've never talked to anyone who hasn't been humbled by them at some point inthe orund, and then stays in your head or the rest of the round.  CC of North Carolina (Dogwood) is also excellent and has a different feel from the Ross courses.

Robert- I just checked, Ran has a review of #2,Southern Pines, Mid Pines, and Pine Needles listed under courses by Ross ---check 'em out! Let us know how Pine Needles is if you play it...they were adding some length for the US AM

Rob,

My advice is, don't miss Tobacco Road or Southern Pines, which features a great routing over interesting terrain (making up for some goofy changes over the years) and a great value, as Mark mentions above.

Mid Pines and Pine Needles are definitely next in line following No. 2. And, No. 1 is cool too.

Robert,

Forgot one.....If you get a chance, also try and play CC of North Carolina.  The Dogwood course hosted the 1980 (81?) US Amateur and is an excellent course.  Haven't had a chance to play the Cardinal course but I've heard good things about that too.

Play Tobacco Road.  I love it, but play it because it's so different form anything else around, even The Pit, which is also not a bad choice in the Pinehurst area.

Brian,
After all my gyrations and questions about where to play in your neck of the woods, turns out a friend of mine is a member at the Cardinal.
So we will be going there on the day we drive down from DC, and dropping Tot Hill. My friend has nice things to say about the Cardinal, for whatever that's worth.

Andy,

By "Cardinal" do you mean CCNC?

Hmm, no. Sounds like there are too many Cardinals flitting about!
The one my friend belongs to is in Greensboro, named Cardinal Golf and Country Club. (www.cardinalcc.com/aboutuscourse.htm)
Re-reading your post, I see the Cardinal you meant is a second course at CCNC. My mistake.
Uh oh, does this mean my friend's Cardinal is not so hot?

robert,
Just to mention something different, try playing at Southern Pines CC, it is not always in great condition, but has some of the best golf terrain anywhere.  plus, you wil have visions of buying it and turning it into the golf course you know it can be!

Andy,

I've never heard of Cardinal, but I don't know much about G'Boro except where they play the GGCC.

I doubt there is much "bad golf in March" for folks from CT.

CHC: Visions of buying a golf course and turning it into something amazing? That happens every so often -- the last time was at Northumberland Links, near Fox Harb'r in Nova Scotia. A Robbie Robinson design with five holes near the ocean, including a fine par three that plays directly alongside the water. For $2-million you could turn it into a course you'd never forget...

Thanks for the tip.

Apparently it is where they play the Cardinal Amateur each year.

ahughes,

The Cardinal in Greensboro is not a bad course.  It's an early Pete Dye design (1972) back when his budgets were a little smaller for moving dirt.  Has some good holes and memorable par 3's.  Fun, drivable par 4 12th has nice risk-reward.

It also hosts the annual Cardinal Amateur, one of the stops on the Amateur circuit a la Azalea/Crump/Western/Sunnehanna, etc.  ChrisB has most likely played here in this event.

Bill Coore worked with Dye on the Cardinal Club here in Greensboro.  It is a challenging course, and the Cardinal Am is a popular tourney.

I could be wrong, but I always feel its worth it with a Dye course. At the worst it will always be interesting.

I think I'm responsible for the misquote on Brian's part.  I've been harrassing him with e-mails lately about my March trip to Pinehurst, and I'm from CT.  He's just a little confused  ;D

As for some of the Southern Pines recommendations...I was speaking with the Pro at Tobacco Road and he said that it was typically one of the last courses in the area to come around each Spring conditions-wise.  He said that the greens would be good by mid-March, and the fairways would be good a few weeks after that.  So, by the end of March, you might be okay.

I am in the camp that likes Tobacco Road, but you really have to play it a couple times, or play it with someone who's been there before. There are some blind shots and some strategic club selections that can get you in trouble if you don't pull the right club.

Obviously #2 is a must, Pine Needles and Mid Pines make for a great 36 holes one day. If you're going to be in Raleigh, I'd recommend heading up to Durham and playing Duke if you have the chance. Anderson Creek is also getting good reviews, it's a Love III course but a bit of a drive form Pinehurst I think.

Those are my personal highlights, but there are tons of nice public courses to choose from.

If I had 5 rounds in the Pinehurst area, I would play, in order:

#2
#2
#2
#2
and, then
#2.

If I had a sixth round, I would play Dogwood at the CCNC.

My seventh would then be at #2, and so on, and so on ...
