Pat
I'm not sure what this happens to do with Old Tom....you appear to be hijacking this thread back to your briar patch...NGLA and GCGC. But what the hell....
I don't think I was the only one who thought you were off the mark on that Macdonald quote...TE Paul and others. That is an example of questionable research IMO on your part, trying tailor or edit a quote to fit your narrow theory.
The entire quote begins "However, there happedned to be some 450 acres of land on Sebonac Neck, having a mile frontage on Peconic Bay and lying between Cold Spring Harbor and Bull's Head Bay. This property was little known and had never been surveyed. Everyone thought it more or less worthless. It abounded in bogs and swamps and was covered with an entanglement of bayberry, huchelberry, blackberry, and other bushes and was infested by insects. The only way one could get over the ground was by ponies. So Jim Whigham and myself spent two or three days riding over it, studying the countours of the ground. Finally we determined it was what we wanted, providing we could get it reasonably. It adjoined the Shinnecock Hills GC. The company agreed to sell us 205 acres, and we were permitted to locate it as best to serve our purpose. Again we studied the countours earnestly; selecting those that would fit in naturally with various classical holes I had in mind, after which we staked out the land we wanted."
The 450 acres of land eventually was paired down to 205 acres. Do you think Macdonald chose the land with bogs and swamps or the land to "best to serve" his purposes? My take...inconclusive.
A map or schematic...whats the difference....you can call it what you want its the same thing. Whatever it is you don't appear to have it and that's a shame. GCGC has the map from 1950 -- why don't you go there and look it up?
But you do have the aerial in GCGC history of the 12th....where you can see two distinct tees for the 13th. Do you see where the ground is worn from the 12th green to the two tees...there are two informal paths? Travis's description in 1909 and 1910 match the aerials in 1938 and 1947 which match the map for 1950 which match the aerials of the 13th from 1936.
Here is Craig Disher's aerial that show two tees for the 11th...do you see them (incidently, this also matches the schematic)?
