Nice to see a place not overloaded with bunkers and yet proving that green complexes with good short grass surrounds can protect par as well or better than an abundance of bunkers. When will we stop letting bunkers define so much of design?
When photos with just the right shadows become less important.
As in never.
back on topic.
Memorial Par has a nice variety of short game options.
Bunkers as they are expected to be presented these days, are FAR easier than short grass or rough around greens.
Rough got a bad name in GCA circles a few years ago, but it can serve to keep the ball somewhere near the green surface and still provide a variable challenge.
I'm not really a fan of a steady diet(as in every hole)of all (ultra)short grass and elevated greens causing ping pong results(continuously chasing athe ball down slopes) for most ams-making putter the ONLY sensible choice.
I find slopes and short grass very effective and fear inducing as an occasional hazard-just not every hole, where it simply becomes a card wrecking slower game lacking in short game variety.
Firmer turf with a bit of grass is ideal(think UK-firm but not mowed to .20 of an inch) for such surrounds-creating options and allowing bounces for the more creative player.
Sadly, the default(at high end courses) has become super tight and fast, often moist, terrorizing any am attempting anything other than rolling the ball,
which I've gotten quite good at with a 5 wood....
Options and actual variety are key.
