Scottsdale/ Phoenix Ideas
« on: January 24, 2024, 02:21:32 PM »
My cousin is turning 40 this year and we are trying to plan a guys trip to Scottsdale area.  I usually try to play courses we have not played before and the courses we played were Troon North, Talking Stick, Quintero, and TPC Stadium.  We should be able to play two rounds.  Does anyone have any recommendations of private or public courses, places to stay, or places to eat?  It's been awhile since I was there. Thank you

I think We-Ko-Pa should be your first option.  The Saguaro course (C&C) is terrific, and the Cholla is also worth playing.

A bit south, but worth the trip, is Ak-Chin Southern Dunes.  I really enjoyed playing this course.  Something about it seemed different than most other desert courses I have played.

Finally, I have always liked Papago, and it is pretty convenient on your way in or out of town.

A second for We Ko Pa.

I wouldn't call it great, but it's a decent course, and it has the advantage of being completely free of housing.  FWIW, JK's brother did the first iteration of it and a reno in 2003.

It's named after the Apache Longbow helicopter, built across the street.

I've played it w several times, and am now a member at Red Mountain Ranch, a mile or so away.

I often play Longbow and Southern Dunes during my AZ trips, but didn't play Longbow this week because they were charging something like $190. That's too rich for my blood even though it's high season; most times I've played it for $120 max. I like Southern Dunes a lot. Challenging but really well done and playable. I like Talking Stick North as well; the South course has grown on me and as has been said on here many times it's interesting to play both courses to see what C&C did architecturally on the same largely flat desert land.

If you are down near the airport I would recommend you stop in for something to eat and a tequila at Cucina Madrigal which has been highly regarded as perhaps the best Mexican restaurant in the US.

For two rounds, if you're staying anywhere north of Talking Stick and don't want to drive much, TPC Champions & Grayhawk (Isabellas after) are tough to beat for a quick 2-day in the same area.

However, We Ko Pa Saguaro would be my #1 choice.

As far as where to stay, the range is pretty much endless .. just depends what you're looking for. You can find a wide range as well in the area of TPC .. kind of the "heart" of it all. Restaurants .. also depends .. but if you play Grayhawk, Isabellas is a no brainer for post round entertainment .. and Local Bistro a few hundred yards away has awesome food / vibe. If you want to PM me with more of what you're looking for, feel free. Restaurants (and hotels) are endless in a pretty small area.

He'll, Longbow is $299 on the Saturday of the Phoenix Open.

Everything is priced idiotically during the WM Phoenix Open week. Nothing surprising there.

Mountain Shadows is a fun par 3 course in Paradise Valley. That would be a good warm up course depending on your flight times.

Played Saguaro and Cholla this week and while Saguaro is certainly top notch, Cholla is not slouch with some very cool holes.

Is it harder to get a tee time in the Phx area during baseball spring training than it is in Jan/early/mid Feb (other than during the Phx Open)?

Don't overlook Grand Canyon U, even though it's in a very urban section of town.   On the higher end of the $$$ scale, Whirlwind (Devils Claw).is surprisingly good.   As is AK Chin Southern Dunes south of the city

Desert Highlands is one of the best in the area and well worth playing. They have a very cool putting course which you should definitely get in.
