I sure hope Golspie can make a go of it.
I understand the erosion concern/cost.
"Better" course conditions are NOT the answer,in fact they often are a highly functional filter or sorting hat.

Gents -

As I mentioned earlier, I have been a Golspie member for 20+ years. I was able to attend the recent meeting of the club's membership via Zoom. I would like to clarify a few issues.

- The club did not solicit or seek this recent offer. It took the club very much by surprise.

- The club was not and is not looking for a "sugar daddy."

- The club membership feels very strongly they are the current custodians of the course, with an obligation to maintain it and pass it on to future generations. It is an asset that belongs to the community. The members believe it is not theirs to sell.

- As I mentioned above, the club had one of its best seasons ever in terms of new members joining and attracting more visitor play. The course is now showing up on some tour operator's lists, which will generate more revenue for the club in future years. 

I am tempted to say this incident is "much ado about nothing." But life is full of surprises.

That is not quite true . . . if the club is in debt and can't afford to pay it off, then they could be vulnerable to a takeover.

Thanks for the link to the NT article. Yes, it is a dire situation. In fact, the whole town of Golspie (and the A9 highway running thru it) is at risk from coastal erosion and rising sea levels.

There is also an article in the NT about the damage done to the train line that runs along the coast from Golspie up to Wick.

The problem is Golspie doesn’t have much of a primary dune ridge to give it any protection. There’s only a very shallow sand covering over pebbles. Hence the wave action on the shoreline and the showering of the seaside fairways with tons of small stones every storm.
I’m not sure there’s any dunes to stabilise!

The reality is the coastline at Golspie has been eroding for well over 100 years. The original clubhouse was between the current 3rd tee and the water before it was lost to erosion. The par-3 sixth hole used to be 170 yards long. Now it is 150 yards long due to erosion.

Erosion generally over time is an issue along many stretches of the UK East Coast. Storm damage is a slightly different issue and is dependent on the direction of individual storms, which usually don’t come from the East.
As to buy-outs, take-overs etc, this would be governed by the ownership structure, Scottish Law and the intricacies of company law within that.
