What's your favorite warming hut?
« on: May 07, 2023, 08:12:04 PM »
In the Club TFE forums, I got excited because they reviewed Orinda CC, which does not have returning nines, which means warming hut (theirs is at the 11th tee apparently).

I love a warming hut, and think they are experientially significant because they feel like part of the golf course experience, where is returning to the clubhouse feels like an intermission to me. I'm much, much more likely to purchase concessions from a warming hut, and just really enjoy them as another way they can express the vibe of the course.
I think my favorite that I've experienced was at Lawsonia, just because the experience pure Wisconsin (they have one even though they have returning nines). The food was absolutely on point, and definitely made me feel much better about not even coming close to the 10th green.

Anyway, are there any especially interesting ones (architecturally, experientially, or even just unique) you all know about? They are so few and far between in the states, I feel like I'd love a coffee table book about them.

Ha, as most here know, I am a member at Orinda so you caught me with your first sentence.  Would enjoy hosting you there.  Yes the 11th hole snack shack is a great stopover...good food and beverage selection.

I live in Marin now so a cool spot up here is the beverage spot at Meadow Club...there was a fire there last year so hopefully it is good now.

Another fun spot is Clear Creek...nice setting away from play but like everything there, it is perfect for a quick bite and/or beverage.

And of course the 11th tee at Olympic (or off the 6th green on Ocean Course).  Burger dogs etc are hard to beat.

Much more than a warming hut, the Hideout at Sagebrush tops my list. Another contender would be the hidden shack near the 8th green at Old MacDonald. Mid -nine would consider the drive thru Wolf Den at Wolf Creek in Mesquite.

I’ll note Bakersfield Country Club only because you pass its snack shack/warming hut four different times— after 1, 4, 11, and 14.

While it is much too posh to be called a "hut" or a "shack," the halfway house on the Carnegie Club/Skibo Castle course is very nice. It is more a 1/3-2/3 house than a halfway house as you can access it after the 6th and 12th holes.

There are so many good ones, many of which have been mentioned! The hut with the tea sandwiches at Shoreaces stands out because it feels funny to eat something so formal during golf but they really are an ideal snack.

Other favorites: the DIY cocktail bar at Ohoopee; the tequila shack at Baker's Bay; and the hut at Brookline, which has some of the best trail mix you'll find anywhere.

I have to assume that a warming hut is synonymous with a halfway house?

Snack shack, warming hut, halfway house, for my purposes here, I’m conflating them. I’m talking about all the mid-round structures that provide a bit of food/drink and perhaps some ginger beer.

Technically I think a warming hut needs seating and a potential heat source I think? But that’s not what I mean here. I probably should have said halfway house through (even if not at the halfway point).

I will 2nd Pete's nomination.  As great as the golf is at SageBrush, the Hideout holds it own too!

Epic golf & hangout spot afterwards!

The sausage sandwich at Sunningdale Old didn’t disappoint. Nor the green Gatorade and grape at Pine Valley. Just a little name dropping.

Sunningdale and Northland are the two I recall most fondly.

These are the two most iconic examples.  It always struck me as odd that Pebble Beach doesn’t have a great one.

I am also fond of the cheese and crackers at the little huts by the tenth tee at Chicago Golf Club and at NGLA.

There are some crazy elaborate examples in Asia, especially at South Cape and Whistling Rock, which cost 100x as much to build, and each of which has multiple locations on the course.

Sunningdale is the one that jumps to mind. The boathouse at Ardfin is a pretty good spot too. It falls between the 11th and 12th holes and with the fire raging and whisky in hand, can take some encouragement to leave.

One thing that makes Yale’s great is it comes at the crescendo of the round. You climb a hill and the reveal of the 9th green is stunning. A quick snack gives you an extra minute to mull over club selection.

It’s at a point in the round where you don’t mind bumping up on the group ahead as it’s always fun to watch them hit their shots into the Biarritz. The Hummel hot dogs that are served are made in New Haven and are a staple at many of the legendary Drive-Ins throughout New Haven and Fairfield counties. Finally it’s always fun to jump in a cart and have a quick lunch there at the tables that overlook the green rather than sitting in the clubhouse.

The Deal hut is legendary (Bovril and Sherry with a sausage roll) and that at Porthcawl, behind the 8th Green, surely has the best view of almost any hut, with a similar sort of hut menu to RCPD

Two of the reasons I listed Southern Pines: great hot dogs and a chance to see how much risk group in front takes on Number 11.

I was going to nominate the Ardfin boathouse too. A welcome respite on a fierce, chill day. It was a wrench to leave after a fine lunch.

Robin, Scott,

Was the course too brutal to take you back outside? It’s Top-100 in the world, don’t you know? You shouldn’t even be stopping in the hut if the golf is that good!

It's been mentioned several times, but I can't believe that anywhere in golf can surpass the Sunningdale house.  It is a distinct symbol of the two great courses.

The Jerky Shack next the 12th tee at Bluejack National is epic.
