I was thinking about Port Fairy this morning (as I often do) and it occurred to me that the

3s — 4, 8, 11, 15
and
5s — 1, 5, 12, 18

are almost perfectly spaced.

Is there another course that hits the mark more perfectly?

I’m not even sure if it’s a quality you’d actively seek, but it’s pretty interesting that they landed on that configuration.

I've always quite enjoyed the symmetrical (almost) nature of the course I grew up on - the 3s and 5s are quite well spread. Par goes:

3    3
5    5
4    4


If 10 was a 5 (it's a long 4, so it's actually a 5 for the ladies), it would be very well done.


On the counterpoint, is there a more unevenly spaced 3s and 5s than at Inwood on Long Island?

It doesn't feel that off when you play it in the moment, but thinking about it, to have three par 5s and all of them are done by the 6th tee is odd and a 5 hole stretch with no par 4s is pretty unusual on a full length course.

I've been working at Port Fairy for just over 20 years and it's a remarkable place. It's almost four hours from Melbourne and off the radar of most tourists but it's a beautiful town and well worth the effort so see it.
The course is on the edge of the ocean and has a few holes - 3,5,14,15,16 - amongst the very best in Australia.

It's $750 (A) year membership with about 600 members and a green fee of around $60 - so some of the best value golf in the world.
They slowly chip away at improving the course and Mike DeVries had a couple of great ideas when he visited a year ago on his way to Seven Mile Beach.
Nail them and it's a top 20 course in the country.

Alex Russell's Lake Karrinyup in Perth is another with quite even spacing and ordering.


Par 3s: 5, 8, 12, 17
Par 5s: 3, 7, 11, 15


Like Port Fairy it has no more than two consecutive 4s.

For such a hilly piece of land it's kind of odd that it works this way, and with some awkward tee shots at 2, 13 and 18 it makes me wonder if there's a better routing that looks less conventional on a scorecard.
