I'm quite interested in watching the golf this week. We have Kings Course at Gleneagles, but the one that catches my attention is Hillside. I'm chipping away at the links, and wonder what others might add to the conversation. This is the smidgen that I have as kindling ...

Fred Hawtree built the course out from 9 to 18 holes, when land was added. Donald Steele did some work in the early 2000s. Mackenzie & Ebert are retained presently to carry out additional modifications.

Course tour here: https://www.hillside-golfclub.co.uk/course/course_tour/1st_hole

I'd love to hear more from you lot. There is a thread from Sean Arble on top 20 courses in England, and Hillside dances in on occasion, but gets bumped out by neighbors like Formby and S&A.

Hillside is lauded in my neck of the woods (Northwest England) as having the best back nine in the country. Sean, in his contrarian way, prefers the front nine!

Lots of work has been done recently, including building new dunes to spice up the flatter parts of the course. I’ve not been there myself for years, since a visit with Jim Eder, formerly of this parish.

I need to get back soon.

I am in the camp of Hillside being one of the lesser lights of the lauded NW England courses. The back nine routing is very dubiously forced while the front nine is (was?) very natural. That said my PoV is that it's very difficult to create engaging and playable golf through large dunes. I would like to go back some day, but many other courses in that hood are more appealing to me.

Another regular GCA poster (he knows who he is, and he can break cover if he wants) has referred to Hillside as Britain's most overrated course, and I know what he means.

The back nine has remarkable terrain, but the golf holes are disconnected from it, I think because they were constructed by driving bulldozers through the dunes. Fred Hawtree was not a bad architect, but he wasn't a great one either.

Basically, if you think Birkdale is the best course in England, you'll love Hillside. If you find it flat and unworthy of its magnificent terrain, you'll have similar thoughts about its neighbour.

Here's a couple of examples:

Fabulous topography, but the golf hole is wholly separated from it. More sensitive construction could have done something really special here.

This par five (I think it's the eleventh) is in my opinion the best hole on the course. The bunker on the left of the fairway is very well placed, but it is so pathetically small and underwhelming. Something larger and less circular would transform the hole -- it would connect the hole to the landform and it would have a vastly greater visual impact.

Timely question for me, Ron.

Had a bit of fortune on the US Open so booked a trip to North England in October in Fitz's hono(u)r.
Here's what we have so far:

Arrive Sunday Manchester: Formby Ladies
Monday: Southport and Ainsdale
Tuesday: Formby or Saint Anne's Old or West Lancashire?
Wednesday: Royal Birkdale
Thursday: Woodhall Spa
Friday: Ganton

Royal Lytham is booked solid and Hillside is under maintenance that week, so I'm between those three for Tuesday's round. Anybody have a recommendation between these three supermodels?

Phillip - three cracking courses, for overall experience on and off the course I’d play Formby, it’s a wonderful course and club.

Adam - motorways through the dunes, who’d ever say that! Where as Rye, Deal and Sandwich go over, along and between the dunes the back nine at Hillside has dead flat fairways framed by lovely dunes, they are just a bit sterile for my taste.

I would choose Formby. But it's no hardship to play West Lancs.

What happens after Friday?

Philip,

With all due respect and teacup more, can I tell you how jealous I am, without telling you how envious I am of your trip? I shall do so by disguising my envy as vitriol, and tell you to stop the thread jump now!

Seriously, that's a fantastic line-up of courses and I am very happy for you. Is it the first time you'll be seeing any/all of them?

I'd love to know more about Hillside, but if the resident inmates see fit to help PC find his way, I'm all for that, as well.

Hillside is good enough to host any tournament they want including The Open.  I love the golf course but then again I just love links golf.  S&A is great fun as well but not quite the same test of golf that Hillside is at least for the pros.  I also love Royal Birkdale having played it many times.  You can't go wrong with any of these courses.

Thank you all for the responses, I've emailed Formby [was leaning that way] so hopefully they can fit us in!

Sean A- back to real life after Friday, or at least home  ;D

Ron- I'm really excited. Have not been to that area so will be a first look at all of them. It's a bit of a redemption tour as I noted in the Saint Andrews thread, have had some severe back issues that finally broke down completely on my last visit to the UK so I have been in physical therapy for 3 years with very little golf. I literally played until I couldn't walk anymore. Even if it was paid for by Fitz I've earned this one.
