Rory/Hovland
« on: July 16, 2022, 03:57:08 PM »
I thought the 3rd round today of the British Open was wonderful. The leaderboard was filled by all the best players hitting wonderful shots from quirky lies all day until towards the end when their became a 3-4 shot separation. I thought the course has brought out the best players as it always does in spite of the hardness of the fairways.

It reminded me of Trevino v Nicklaus, 65/66 shootout years ago.

Victor Hovland, Cameron Smith and Cameron Young are young excellent players of the future in addition to Scotty Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris.  I think golf is in a great place now with these 6 players
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

You got to give it to Hovland today. He never blinked. Just went about his business and shot 66.

It was great stuff. Ideally Sunday repeats the fine play. We know it will be dramatic regardless.

Golf is in a great place.

Not so much if within the next few weeks any of those mentioned makes a decision that means they won’t be playing against the others very often in future, if at all!

I am sure they will be more interested in the Barracuda Championship.

What is the Barracuda Championship? Some people golf in the morning and then watch The Open on tape delay. Keep "news" out of the title.

I wonder how much the McIlroy/Hovland pairing-and their performance-had to do with a shared love/pride for the Ryder Cup.
I bet both will (mostly) enjoy today's round.

Right now 3 of the 4 guys still out on the course have a chance to win or tie. Does not get much better than that.

Ugh. NBC's framing of that last half hour as "look what happened to Rory" instead of "look what Cam Smith is doing" is so annoying. Great tournament nevertheless. They're still doing it now as I type this in the post- round highlights.

Fascinating: the first generation of post Tiger stars just barely managed to establish themselves as greats before the next generation was (already) ready to supplant them!
Wonderful golf!

Great point. Young may be next. He played great. Cam Smith played great. Well deserved. Can he putt!

Looks like we got 2 great players in the Camerons for the future. Bravo

Cary you are right, Cam Young what a clutch putt on 18 when he had to have it. Pressure back to Cam Smith, but he was in too close to feel much. Cam Y almost made 2-3 close putts in the final holes as well or we would have a playoff.
Cameron Smith putted so amazingly well that really it took that kind of performance to beat Rory's tee to green game. Wonderful theater on 18 and how many people think it is a weak hole now? ;D

Making a 2 on the 72nd hole at the Old Course when you absolutely have to do so is quite incredible.

Likewise over here. SKY Sports are having a wake for McIlroy. It reminds me of 1999 when Paul Lawrie was all but forgotten in the discussion on Jean Van Der Velde's paddle in the burn at 18.

Ignoring the fact that in 2022 the "peoples" favourite didn't win, this Open also reminds me of 1984 when Ballesteros who was playing in the second last group, overhauled Tom Watson who was in the final group. Fantastic stuff with drama right up to the end.

McIlroy is building a significant amount of scar tissue in the major tournaments. Cam Smith played incredible and won with his fine play but Rory should be credited with an assist. Say what you want about the way he played the 18th today in an effort to tie but it’s not clear that he would have had enough to even tie Young for 2nd.

Over the weekend, the final game was even par 70-74-73-71.

Over the weekend, the penultimate games was twenty seven under par 66-66-65-64.

Like Saturday was the first movie and Sunday the disappointing sequel.

Each winner of the 4 majors this year is less than 30 years old. I don't think that has eever happened before.

What is the Barracuda Championship?

The Barracuda Championship is the tournament the "strategic alliance" puts on the same week as a major.
