Thorndon Park
« on: July 12, 2022, 04:48:51 AM »
I had one of the most unexpectedly pleasurable rounds in a long time at Thorndon Park (Essex) yesterday. SE England is currently enduring a heatwave, so the course was almost deserted, but I was really impressed. Posh parkland isn't normally my thing, but for a sense of space and serenity and the usual Colt-esque intelligent green designs barely 10 minutes from the M25, Thorndon Park ticks a lot of boxes. And there is simply masses of room, in part because over the past decade 3000 trees have been felled on the property. The other, pleasingly old-fashioned aspect is that the golfer is always moving forward from green to tee.

I can't find much discussion of TPGC on GCA for (at least) the past 15 years, but for those heading out of London towards Suffolk, or simply looking for somewhere a bit different (and notably cheaper) than the usual Surrey/Berkshire suspects, I would warmly recommend having a game at Thorndon, even if the clubhouse (in the shadow of the old stately home) has a rather low and airless main room as its central feature.

Richard, any specifics what made Thorndon so pleasurable?
After a cursory look at some photos and reviews, my initial reaction was the bunkering seems pleasant based on the variety of their placement. Did you get that sense?
Also, could you tell me your thoughts on the 2nd? For some inexplicable reason, I'm enthralled by that "beauty mark bunker" that abuts the green.
Thanks, Peter.

I don't have any particular doubt that Colt _did_ design Thorndon, but oddly I haven't been able to find a single piece of hard evidence to prove it.

Must talk to the club and see what, if anything, they have.

Easily the best course in Essex and makes my English Top 100 with ease. The front 9 is particularly interesting.

Ken Moodie has been helping them with the bunkers.

I said to him it was only the lack of any really outstanding Par 3's that held it back from being amongst Colt's finest.
Ken was much to diplomatic to agree with that!

To Peter’s question, Thorndon had numerous really enjoyable tee-shots, which combined temptation with danger, and plenty of intriguing green sites. Tony’s criticism of the short holes seems entirely fair. The greens were a gentle Monday pace when we played, but at normal slickness would I suspect add considerably to the challenge.

I was told firmly by a TPGC member that Orsett was the second-best course in Essex, with Chelmsford perhaps third.

Anyway TPGC itself was, as stated, a genuine delight!

Agree with Orsett , another fine Braid and the nearest thing Essex has to a proper heath.
(With apologies to 9 holer Crowlands Heath in DARTFORD!!!!!, which does have some charm :)).

Have yet to play Chelmsford or Colchester which local opinion seem to think have similar virtues.
Can't remember which one did little for you?

The real rough gem is the Lower course at Hainault Forrest.  the first London County Council Course and an early example of public golf. Taylor and Hawtee and full of outstanding holes.  Haven't been back for a while but basic maintenance and the removal of bunkers to save money has lessened its impact.
I did a tour on here but all I can find using search is a thread saying someone else couldn't find it.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Wow I'd forgotten that profile which is of Hainault Forrest Upper.  Again some really fantastic holes 6, 10, and a great 4 hole finish.  But perhaps to many short Par 4's and a few dull long  its not so satisfying.  I know I profiled the Upper on here but....
