Excellent...I cannot wait to see what the specific plans are for this project. East Lake may be the least impressive "famous" course I've ever played having grown up on a preserved Ross.

East Lake has a complicated architectural history, some of which is unclear, some of which is contradictory (different accounts of what Ross did or didn't do there). I note that East Lake describes Green's job as a "renovation". That makes sense.

East lake has lots of potential, but a "restoration" would raise questions that are largely unanswerable today.

i actually like East Lake. I think it is fun, but I am eager to see what AG will do.I played a couple of his renovations this year and they were excellent.

I mentioned this as a rumor in a thread here a few months ago, but they didn't have an architect attached at that point. I'd also heard it was starting this fall instead of fall 2023.

Regardless, I'm excited to see what is done. I don't think East Lake has the potential to be a top 100 course, but I do think it can be a better course than it is right now.

It seems Phil Mickelson is excited for this renovation and took to Twitter yesterday to announce it. He was replying to a post from Geoff Schackleford where Geoff stated, "Another long overdue de-Reesing..." Phil's response, "This is AWESOME. Any chance of starting sooner?  ;)  I think he'll take a great course and make it one of the best in the world."

Certainly no love lost between Lefty and Rees.  ;D

While I'm excited to see how Green goes about changing things, the reporting on this has been disappointing and agenda driven.  As mentioned above, the project is a renovation, not a restoration, despite many outlets characterizing as a restoration.  There are no Ross design plans available and he re-designed the course after Bendelow.  While most outlets are inferring Rees moved away from Ross' design here, I haven't seen anyone mention it was Cobb who did most if not all of that with his re-design in the 1960's.  Rees was asked to work on the course in the early 1990's when Tom Cousins made the effort to to revitalize the course and surrounding area that had been in significant decline for decades.  Rees was asked to create a competitive tour venue, restore original intent features, yet most importantly provide a golf course centered around the renewal of the surrounding community. Rees brought back the peninsula green that Tom Bendelow (original architect) had in play before Ross did his re-design and Rees left the routing intact except for the Seventeenth fairway.  Bradley Klein described Rees’ work as “magical” and “simply stunning” while director of golf Jim Gerber remarked, Rees “left his mark here by not leaving his mark.”

I find it sad and a bit lazy for some in the media to constantly rely on this vilification of the Joneses.  At East Lake, Rees was a big part of its revitalization, which ended up working out by the way.  Sure there are those who don't like the course and his work to it, which is fine.  But claiming or even inferring he eliminated original Ross or other work here and Green is returning it to what is was before is incorrect.  Like Rees, Green will need to impart his own interpretation of Bendelow/Ross/Cobb(?), which I'm sure will be great, and celebrated, until decades later when we all decide to pretend we always hated it.

Does East Lake have a long term contract for the Tour Championship event? I would guess yes and this investment maybe extended that commitment?

I don't know that they have a long term contract, but the city of Atlanta does have a sponsor (Coca Cola) that seems to want the tour championship to stay local and has quashed any discussion of moving it around.

I agree. The AG reno/redo whatever is what happens when clubs have excess funds...basically good or bad it is just the flavor of the day...I like the work of AG that I have seen but EL is a good test of golf as it is... There will be a reno of whatever AG does in 15-20 years..and we don't know that name yet...it's sort of like the new fad of the doodle dogs, labradoodles, golden doodles and all types of doodles...no true restoration of EL could be done if it was desired....too much inbreeding..
