There's Philadelphia and then there's Sports' Stadiums Philadelphia.

Don't confuse the two.  Both are fun with the right attitude and easily worth $1000.

I remember going to an Eagles/Giants game in the mid 1980’s at Veterans Stadium. The guy I was with said under no circumstances could he recommend outwardly rooting for the Giants due to personal safety concerns. ;D

Not to threadjack but Philadelphia sports and our fan-base has a long and proud history, as well as a bit of an unfair reputation.   For instance, check out this slanderous, misguided, obviously communist cartoon from the Soviet propaganda newspaper Pravda in 1976 after our Flyers defeated the Soviet Army team 4-1.

Where was Gib then to defend us from the real Bolsheviks!?!?   ;)

No way I would ever pay $1000 to play any course, anywhere. I start choking around $200.
My sentiments exactly...
Only caveat: if I'm with three of my best mates, we'll stretch it to $250 and remember the pre/post-round comraderie more than any shot or scenery that may occur during a round anywhere.

In all fairness to Mike, going to an Eagles game and cheering for other team isn't the only place in the NFL where its dangerous.

I went a Raider game at the Oakland Coliseum once and yes I kept my mouth shut! :D

I think what's interesting is what courses you paid a lot of money ($1,000 or whatever that number is for you) and effort to get there that you wouldn't think twice about doing it again? Mine would be Fishers Island and Royal County Down.

 Green fees.

Golf trips have many expenses. Travel and accommodations. Which can be costly. So getting to some of the top courses require a great expense.

But how many courses would you pay $1000 to golf?
Seems like a silly question. Travel and accommodations are part of appreciating golf architecture. Can’t separate these expenses from green fees.

The Flyers decline was sealed by the merger with Comcast.  If the Flyers win every game in a season it will not change Comcast’s earnings by $.0025 a share per quarter.  Comcast has never cared about The Flyers.  Comcast customer service and the Flyers management share the same corporate culture.  Comcast moved a retired cable tv system executive into the president role for the franchise a few years back.

I don’t think I’d pay $1000 to pay any course. I’ve been lucky enough to play many of the courses mentioned and while I’d like to play others on the list $1K seems too much.

But I just spent $500 for a bottle of scotch and I’m sure many here wouldn’t do that even if they liked scotch so different strokes or swigs for different folks.

This is fantastic. I need to know more. How much would that be per shot? How old is it? Will you drink it or save it?

And that's only entry level expensive.  I found a $10,000 bottle of Cognac for sale in a San Mateo store a number of years back.  It was about 170 years old as I recall. I called Gib to see if he was interested, but apparently he thought it needed to age a bit more.

It is a Black Art 8.1 from Bruichladdich.  Distilled in 1984 and bottled in 2020. 26 years old.

Probably between $20 and $30 a glass depending on how generous you ar with your pours.

I’ve already opened it and it is delicious.

I got an email from a whisky shop in Scotland today.  They had a bottle for £100,000.

The BBC did a report a few years ago on the high end rare whiskey market and found that 1/3 of these whiskies are fakes.

I’d hate to spend that kind of money on a bottle of single malt only to learn it was a recent blend in a refilled bottle.  ;)

It is a problem on the secondary market in particular.  Same with wine.

In the case of this bottle, it is probably real as Gordon McPhail is a very reputable independent bottler who probably has complete documentation and it was just bottled in 2020.

My God can I relate to this. I’ve been married five times and have had a couple of those high end ones that turned out to be fakes. What sucks is that you have already payed for them so you’re stuck drinking them. But the redemption comes when everything has been drunk or just poured down the drain and you can throw the bottle in the garbage. That’s refreshing.

Professor Cirba,
My mainline experience in the Philly area only comes in two flavors: Leafy, lyrical suburbs - or stuck in the arm of a dead junkie.

Don't forget what I do for a living.

I gotta admit to the guilty pleasure of tuning into lunatic sports-talk radio, once I get within 60 miles of your "Brotherly Love" down the Jersey Turnpike.

It actually makes me feel good about our homeless meth-heads out west, at least they don’t throw snowballs at Santa Claus, or are those just Eagles fans?

And Mike, as one of the guys who whines about my political snotosity, maybe you can join the Three Stooges who send me nastygrams and make it a foursome. I was thinking about designating you Shemp, but Curly was the bald one.

No matter how badly you want it to be true, no compass points true north . . . . not even yours.

Don’t forget, when the proletariat come for the bourgeoise, the only choice left for guys who brag about notching 863 private clubs will be between the gallows and a guillotine.

It would have to be a course with a wonderful experience, not just a great course.

From the list of courses that I have played: Cypress Point (with member), Fishers Island, Nanea

From the list of courses that I have not played: Tara Iti, Hirono
