Best renovations 2022

I know some of the suspects what are the ones that open for play this coming year?

Dornick Hills is my only entry in this category, not that I took on the job to try and win any awards.  I just thought it was an important course to restore.

I hope The Addington will be ready for play...very very excited to see the course with all the work being done. I now understand Henry Longhurst's quote re #13 at the Add & #5 at PV :)

Tommy,
Don’t know about you but there are constant articles these days (just read another one this morning) about this being the Golden Age of Restorations  ;D

Clearly it takes (as it often does) the big names to get the attention.  But that is ok as it is mostly good for the game.

However, restorations have been going on for 20+ years but just not on all the high end well known courses.  Most of us knew the attention would turn to work on existing courses when much of the new builds dried up.  It has to if architects wanted to stay busy.

Sam-- we have it scheduled for completion in 2023.  do you have any knowledge that it will be done in 2022?

Paul,You may very well be right. I thought I had read somewhere that they were aiming for 2022 or maybe I am just hopefull that its done sooner rather than later!!!!

Thanks for posting the link to that site. Hanse sure has a lot of work ahead of him!! Curious to see him listed as working at Rolling Green too? Is that a new development? What happened to Keith Rhebb who was there most recently?

PS  Olympic (Lake) might get started sooner than 2024.

Wayne--

1.  I have a theory that Gil Hanse is one of a set of identical triplets...as no one single person could possibly be in all the places he must be.

2.  not sure what happened at Rolling Hills but according to Rhebb's website, "In early 2021, following the completion of the tree removal work and some course conditioning work, Rolling Green management decided to abandon the Restoration Master Plan efforts and hold off on any future work."

3.  agree on Olympic...would guess that Olympic wants the project underway ASAP.  question is how doable is that?

Metairie reopened this week.

I couldn't find anything on Atlanta AC or who the architect is?

Timuquana-FL (may be finished already) is open.

Olympic (Lake) starts construction next year.

Lake Merced is now closed and under construction.

Atlanta AC project is a renovation of the Riverside course. Tripp Davis is the architect.

Didn"t Canterbury just finish a restoration project in the past 5 years if memory serves?  Keith Foster, I believe?

Timuquana-FL (may be finished already)

Timuquana-FL (may be finished already) is open.

First line above is from one of my earlier posts...second line is from Joel Stewart

Both are wrong! While Timuquana (FL) did go under a partial restoration 2 years ago, it is closing Jan 2 2022 for about 8 months for a major restoration (directed by Bruce Hepner) to finish the job

Paul,
Was just perusing your great, robust list. Question, do you think it worthwhile to add public/private designation?  Particularly the renovation/restorations as I had a theory that 80% or more of the work in this space are private clubs. Partiularly in the USA as outside states public/private isn't delineated nearly as much.

Timuquana will close from January through August 2022 for renovations. Mostly infrastructure (drainage, irrigation, a few tee adjustments, tree/forest management).

The reno of the 1914 Ross course Belleair - West will debut late in 2022.  Straka/Fry are committed to add a little new but also restore many of the original features.

It was Hepner and now Rhebb is out there. I don't think anything has been officially approved yet. Some minor work is scheduled for next Fall. My guess is that list meant to say Country (Pepper Pike) which Hanse is doing this year.

Looking forward to seeing the completed work at  Wampanoag which is an under the radar Ross that doesn’t get much buzz outside of the Hartford, Connecticut region. It’s got a bold set of greens which require a number of plays to begin to learn their subtleties. The downhill par 5 6th hole has a pin location that you need to putt in the opposite direction with your back against the hole. As has been mentioned many times on this site it was the genesis for the Donald Ross Society.
