Musgrove Mill is the Tobacco Road of South Carolina

Mike - I used to be a member at Musgrove and I don't get your comparison. I don't think MM is anything like Tobacco Road... either in appearance or reputation. What's your thinking?

We don't have any really "out of the box" courses in SC... at least any that push the envelope on design the way Tobacco Road does. The on;y one that I can think of that might fall into this list would be Cross Creek in Seneca... a PB Dye adventure. But, I doubt anyone who frequents this site has ever played there, so the comparison is probably useless.

The backtrack from 17 green to 18 tee? It's an awkward logjam in the routing, but 17 is less than 150 yards. It's not that onerous a walk. And frankly, 17 green is incredibly wide. So if you exit the green on the right side, it is a very, very short walk to 18 tee.

It's crap, stop making excuses. I would have thought by now the place would have sorted this issue...and I like TR. That said, not a fan of the walk.

Michael,

I'd nominate True Blue and Kiawah Cassique for your consideration.

Or, the Ocean Course.

My only personal experience with Musgrove Mill was walking it during its construction in August 1998 and it was very bold and different for that time.  That is what I am saying.  Reports I’ve gotten from those that have played it say the same.

All of the courses I listed, I personally like.  I think of them like a Salvador Dali painting, many turn away but others consider them masterpieces.

You have to keep in mind that TR was never DESIGNED to be walked. Same with True Blue. True Blue has an even worse back-track at the par-3 14th. The same thing happens at a par-3 on Royal New Kent (forget the number). I agree that these backtracks make the walk a complete suck... but, the courses were never meant to be walked. They were all intended to be cart-only courses from the very beginning. I most prefer courses that were designed for walking golfers, but I don't hold an awkward walk against a course that was never intended to be walked. That's trying to stick a round peg into a square hole.

The walk from 4 green to 5 tee at the Country Club backtracks and is at least as long a walk as the one at TR. Where’s the criticism of that? Maybe TR was designed with carts in mind, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad walk. (As compared to Stonehouse, which has some huge gaps from green to tee. Especially I think it was from 9 to 10.) TR looks like an imposing walk, just like it looks difficult. But in both cases, it’s just not true, in my opinion.

By nature of the artificial grass tee and despite that I have never played there; Rich Harvest Links is the Tobacco Road of Illinois.

I don't think that you understand that this is not a poker game. You need to show your hand when you begin a thread. You don't like Tobacco Road. That should be in your opening statement, if not your thread title.

Is Mammoth Dunes the Tobacco Road of Wisconsin? Oh no wait... It's probably the Irish Course. Maybe the River Course?

Arcadia Bluffs is the Tobacco Road of Michigan.

I guess Eagle Ridge is the Tobacco Road of Kentucky.

I know. Hence the reason the walk sucks...especially in the heat. Still, I would rather walk TR again than I would Royston and that is meant to be walked 😉. The walk is the reason I wouldn't want to play TR on a regular basis.

Why limit this to the USA? Doonbeg is the TR of Ireland and Trump Aberdeen is the TR of Scotland.

Is this before or after the Hawtree reno? I played it 4 years ago and other than some longer walks to some tees, if you play the regular length tees it wasn't too bad. It is a fairly long walk from the edge of the course back home as it wraps around the coast. I really enjoyed the present iteration and if the name was sanitized it would gain more favor from some naysayers most likely.

When in the Landmand thread I referred to the course as the “Tobacco Road of the Midwest” I wasn’t so much referring to the bold expansive architecture as I was to the controversy that the architecture would generate. TR has been a polarizing course since it’s inception, I expect that Landmand may generate a similar controversy. It may or may not but surely just the two words “Tobacco Road” can stir of the hive.

My nominations - each course is one where you can hear glowing or negative reviews:

Wolf Creek - TR of Nevada
Forest Dunes or Outlaw at Desert Mountain- TR of Arizona
PGA West Stadium - TR of California

I can't really come up with a nomination for Minnesota.  I have heard nothing but praise for the Quarry so it does not fit, at least the way I look at the comparison.

Jay I figured as much, and I think most of the nominations so far share 3 common attributes:

1)  Generate controversy
2)  Include Bold architecture with lots of out-of-the-box and/or new features
3)  Fall in the "love it or hate it" category without much middle ground
