Vaughn,

Thanks for the subject and opening post.

What a great project this is.  The golf course looks fantastic, and the scores reflect a difficult challenge for the best players.

I was hoping Koepka was in the mix because of his involvement with the golf course. Not to be. :(

Nice overview and pictures!

The course seems to provide a unique challenge to the players.

To the OP: really enjoyed this writeup and the pictures are stunning!  My in-laws used to live 15 minutes away from Memorial Park and I would play the course multiple times per year during visits there.  Unfortunately, I haven't been to Houston in a couple of years due to the pandemic and my in-laws now live almost an hour away from downtown Houston!  I'm going to have to see if I can get on as a single when I'm down there for Thanksgiving week, I haven't seen the renovation at all and it looks awesome.

Amol, thanks for your kind words. I would go to their website and see if you can sign up for the online system and reserve a tee time when they are available. When I did it last year about this time, the system came on at 06:00 and within about 30 seconds, the day was sold out. haha. Best and you will not regret it. I am not sure what the lead time is now but the tee sheet opened up for certain days.

Why wouldn't it be a good site for the PGA Championship? Isn't the weather in May OK?

 8)  Ira, Houston weather in May is beautiful!  Warm but not getting hot till end of month...

It was a great couple days at Memorial. One could opine about the quality of the architecture at the new Memorial, but I would rather sum it up with a simple message:

Memorial is a gift to the city and people of Houston.

Thanks to Jim Crane, Tom Doak, Don Mahaffey and all those who worked on the project. Great job.

Let me add that significantly upgrading the quality of the golf course does not appear to have altered the atmosphere of Memorial. It is still a microcosm of Houston, a very friendly environment where you can meet and enjoy lots of great people.

Here are a few pics from my phone from when the lighting got decent.  The course really starts to look beautiful in the last afternoons.

So true. The entire park is magnetic. On Monday we drove thru packs of folks enjoying everything from biking, picnicking, tennis, croquet, across ages and cultures. And the golf fits. You drive up to the facility and think, “of course there’s a great golf course here”.

Pete great pics. That creek at the 2nd tee is my favorite reveal. Tom shared it was obscured by trees.

Also, nice photos, Vaughn.  Might need to borrow a couple for my web site.

Thx again
Wondering if you have any “before” photos of #2 prior to clearing the trees?

 8)  V_

You know that MP's #2 green was flanked left and back by the overgrown bushes & weed trees in the drainage ditch now exposed which fronts the new #2 green? ... i took a picture once and it was unremarkable.

Got to play it in late 2019 shortly after it opened and loved it.  Another great example of an almost urban mind is Gold Mountain-Olympic...great group of players, wonderful conditioning, and great architecture

Enjoy Gold Mountain as well as they have built the same “local home of excellent public golf” model.
