if club technology is a distance second, what in your view is the most significant factor that has lead to distance being the biggest issue?

Ben you are right they are intertwined. But I kind of separate the ball and club changes in my mind. It does take two to truly tango but square grooves et all haven't impacted the architecture as significantly !  When a bunch of players can carry it 325 it's hard to imagine the older courses hosting competition

If club technology did not allow guys to swing a driver at 130 mph plus then the ball issue would not be as big of an issue...so, sweet spot size, shaft torque, lightweight shaft materials that allow less for stable longer drivers all make it possible.  Put a 43 inch shaft out there with a driver the size of the old persimmons and the speed is coming down....
