OT-Bryson and Cantlay
« on: August 30, 2021, 08:43:23 AM »
I love Cantlay's swing and I am no fan of Bryson but I saw nothing wrong with this. Why are they making this out to be a big deal?

If BDC had won,  the gushfest would have continued non stop....he didn’t win, nothing to talk about....oh but wait! Maybe we can blow this non issue into an issue and give us something to talk about!

Well if it broke his concentration he sure didn't show it.

Bryson had so many great chances to win and just couldn't get the ball to drop, including a missed 6 footer.  I watched the entire thing and BDC was playing terrific golf...but Cantlay went full Goosen from Shinnecock and was dropping bombs with the flat stick over and over to stay in the match.

I think I heard that Cantlay had the most strokes gained putting ever on the Tour for regulation 72 holes. When, told this Cantlay asked, "So, it was better than when Kevin Na beat me?" while mentioning something about karma.

Nothing will top Bubba Watson asking "You gonna stop walkin' man? Damn! Diddit all day yistiday."

And now on a golf trip, when there is repeated slicing or chunking . . . "diddit all day yistiday".

Thought Cantlay said they were just told to pick up the pace a bit.

Not always a Bryson fan but thought he was a pretty good sport losing a tournament when he clearly played good enough to win.

I don’t blame DCB for asking Cantlay to stop moving. It’s hard to believe there was any ill intent intended by Cantlay and he took the admonition in the spirit it was intended. I’m bored with “Brooksie” and other harassment that he deals with every round. He’s polarizing and invites controversy but there can’t be any doubt about his talent and work ethic. The par he gutted out in the playoff from the water on 18 has a place alongside the Cantlay heroics. I’m coming around a little with DCB(not all in by a stretch). :)

I have two comments after the fact.

1.  I was OK with the low scoring conditions.  I feel a full size golf course that yields birdies on 40% of the holes to the winning player is a reasonable method to test the golfers.  I thought the main reason for the low scoring was the small, predictable breaks in the putts.  80-90% of the approach putts seemed to break a little left or a little right in a very predictable fashion.  You might argue these types of greens best reveal who is putting well.  DeChambeau thought he had made the 5 footer on the 4th(?) playoff hole, and acted like he had misread it; otherwise, I hardly saw anyone who acted like they misread a putt.

2.  DeChambeau's inability to make a putt to win leads me to believe he may be experiencing some mental barriers to winning.  The galleries have been cruel to him this summer, and it would be hard not to be affected by that.  His tee to green game was very impressive, to say the least.  I'm predicting he'll win many more tournaments in his career, but he may have some work to break through and win the next one.

It’s not at all uncommon for short hitters to not allow the same courtesy they demand. While short hitting walkers can be annoying cart ballers who drive up to the green are dangerous.

DeChambeau is not my favorite player by any stretch, but I have no idea what kind of adult (even a drunken one) goes to the tournament to shout "Brooksie" all day.

I have to admit that the day me and my son spent pretending to mock steroid injections every time Barry Bonds looked our way was as happy as I’ve ever been.

JK,

Right on cue, nice work!  ;D

As for the other JK, John Kirk...

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said.  It seemed obvious to me the pressure was really getting to BDC on those playoff holes, especially after that short missed putt.  If no one was around, pretty sure that would have been a snap-in-two-over-the-knee moment.  But outside of the PGA duel with Phil and Brooks, it was the most compelling golf I've watched all year.

P.S.  I do think BDC will eventually figure out how to get his emotions a bit more under control.  He held it together very well until those last couple of playoff holes. And at least he waited until afterwards to do this:

I'd be more concerned with his clear case of chip yips (that attempt on 17 was horrific to watch) than I would be with people yelling "Brooksie" at me. Cantlay was unconscious with the flat stick and Bryson ended up losing. Guess that $1million payday will have to suffice. . .

Craig--I have complained on this site several times that the holes chosen for play-offs are often absurd.  I know they have to cater to the TV networks--and to the spectators that want to get to the holes.  But to have the play-off be a moderate par-4 or par-3--where par is almost always the score--makes little sense.  I would love to see more advance planning to select holes to make the play-offs better.
But, having said that, the play-off at the BMW was some of the most compelling golf television I have ever seen.  I didn't really want it to end!
