I love it Garland and Kalen in a game of wits competing for the gold medal! ;D

Jeff,

Its Game, Set, and Match based on his last post.

If Garland doesn't understand why one should play against the best competition, at all stages of an event, if you want to become the best of the best, then I can't help him!  ;)

P.S.  Especially if you scroll up to Post #27 in this thread and see he already admitted it.  ;D

So you can't come up with reasonable answers to your questions, so you are just going to sling more BS. You have my sympathy. You seem to overlook that the NBA is a business. There are as many teams as the business can support. The people owning the franchises make lots of money from them. You have gone beyond apples to oranges in trying to compare the NBA to the Olympics. You are now in the realm of comparing hazel nuts to papaya.  ::)
Now why don't you start your absurd "hockey players are the greatest athletes in the world" claim?
 ::)

They aren't? Show me a sport where someone has to learn how to skate extremely well, think incredibly fast, learn skills to get the past a goalie blocking 65% of the goal just standing there all while 5 guys are trying to take your head off. Elite hockey players certainly make my list of greatest athletes in the world. Certainly no other major sport comes close to producing the athletes hockey does.

And yes, Olympic hockey is very cool even if it isn't the pinnacle of the sport.

Which is why (tried to get that across in my last post) the 1980 hockey miracle was one of the most moving victories in the history of American sports. Those were COLLEGE KIDS - not NHL mercenaries.

The bullshit, made-for-TV, huffing and puffing, NBA "Dream Team" canard was fait accompli from the get go. They won again this year, but who gives a shit? Anybody?

Uh no, not really.

But if Coach K (or another storied NCAA coach) took a bunch of college kids and took gold, then we got something. Same thing with golf . . . . . otherwise, yawn.

Show me a sport where someone has to learn how to skate extremely well, ...

Well you got me there. I guess most most athletes don't skate "extremely" well. Although, I maintain that basketball players, and others would benefit from skating a lot.

To prevent, or mitigate ankle injuries, not for any skill improvement.

Now if they played full contact basketball on skates your game of giants may get my attention. Being freakishly tall is not athletic.

Gib, mercenaries get paid. NHLers going to the Os has to be one of the worst financial decisions an athlete can make.

Freakishly tall unathletic people don't play basketball. If they try, they are put to shame by freakishly tall athletic people who are eventually retired by the freakishly tall very and extremely athletic people.

And for someone who spent his winters dashing about ice rinks on skates in the frozen north, the attribution of skating ability as being a prime example of athletic prowess rings hollow.

Try it sometime. Then try to play a game. Then try to play the game with your head on swivel. I know, hockey isn't for everybody, but to assert it doesn't take great athletic skill to play at even a relatively elite level is a bit clueless.

I used to play golf with Peter Bondra. His hand-eye coordination was absolutely remarkable. He could throw a tee in the air and hit it with the neck of his golf club. He'd never miss. It is one thing to be able to hit puck that comes directly at you and quite another thing to hit one that comes from the side at 90 mph. And then to do it on skates is amazing. I don't know if hockey players are in a class by themselves but it doesn't take much time to call the roll.

Olympic golf should be amateur match play with a first round stroke play elimination. Currently it is just another pro tournament with limited players and no purse.  Probably the least interesting pro tournament.  Simply a revenue generator for the IOC.

And let's return the track and field events to amateurs only. Nothing like being a pauper to help you with you character and ability to train to be the the greatest in the world. ::)

On a related note.  Give the new NCAA rules, will NCAA golfers have to turn down endorsements and otherwise to be considered "Amateurs" by USGA standards?

They may be the one group who remains on the outside looking in vs the athletes in other sports. Either that or the US Am is now gonna be a mix of US Jr Am kids and older adults from the Mid-Am group.

Or will some of them try to compete in some pro events for money? Interesting dilemma for those players.
