OT straw poll appropriate guest behavior
« on: July 22, 2021, 01:39:13 PM »
1st, this doesn’t apply to me. A friend that’s the 4th on an upcoming trip to a top 100 club. We’ve never met the member.
Is it appropriate to show up to the club in shorts and a t-shirt and then use the members locker room to change?

Yes -- but only if the course is rated lower than 85th, on the Golf Digest list

Tell your crazy friend that the locker room is no place for changing clothes. He can find a 7-11 beforehand to do that.

Hard to believe this is a serious question. Obviously the answer is no but most private clubs have a guest policy posted on their website. Your friend should check it out.

In this scenario is that 85 or 83?

In this particular instance, I’m well aware it’s inappropriate. I’m attempting to point out how far off the norm this person is.

Ah -- that does complicate the matter.

You need to choose what type of parasite you want to be. If you knew the host and could ask him permission he would not have a problem.

Knowing my buddy, he’s a step above a tape worm. What type is that?

Send your buddy the link to the club's dress policies as indicated. Clubs are actuallt starting to crack down, not let up, on dress codes and cell phone use.

But, fair warning, if that's his mindset, then you have additional exposure once he's there... ;D

I’ve had to drive guests to Walmart to improve their stylings before rounds at my own club.

What about the reverse— playing all day in appropriate attire, then changing into a t-shirt and shorts for the ride home? Walking directly from the locker room to the car with no stops.

Play by the rules or stay at home.
Not worth the aggravation to cater to a guest's fashion needs

Being a grown man I’m comfortable in khaki shorts and a collared for a ride home. I’d personally never show up to a club with a dress code in anything that didn’t fit that code out of respect for the course and it’s members. To quote Ron Burgundy, when in Rome.

Bigger bugaboo at some places is changing shoes in the parking lot.

No one is asking to change shoes in a parking lot.  The question is, after a very long drive, a plane ride, coming straight from work, etc. does the player need to be in proper golf attire upon stepping out of the vehicle? Should a player stop and change at a truckstop, or can a player use the locker room at the facility to change into proper golf attire?

Always err on the side of caution...generally, t-shirts are a no-no at top facilities.

Given how popular hoodies have become.... and are seemingly acceptable, I've owned a few single color "T-shirts" made from decent material over the years that look a lot better than one of those.

Even one of the best players on the planet frequently wore them.....at Augusta! ;)

Forty years ago I drove to Baltusrol with a couple of friends. I had played that afternoon and we pulled up to the club about midnight. I had shorts on. The guard at the door made me change into long pants before he would let me walk upstairs to my room. Never made that mistake again.

What we think of as proper now (showing up business casual) would have resulted in dreadful embarrassment to the host 100 years ago.

Even true for a lot of things. When I was a kid I wore a sport jacket and tie to Yankee Stadium and on an airplane. Only in the last few years have I given up the jacket and tie.

The player guarding first base for the Canadian softball team is not wearing a ball cap. Caps should be mandatory. Very offensive.
