If Bryson was my son...
« on: July 15, 2021, 09:43:59 PM »
I would say shut up Bryson and play the golf course! I'd say you took Bomb and Gauge to an extreme level and had some nice wins. But if you are ever going to win an Open at places like RSG and Carnoustie, you are going to have to look at the architecture and play golf. You are a smart guy and an excellent golfer, figure it out and adapt.

Then I'd tell him about when I first played overseas (Ireland) and whined like a baby about the "hard-packed" fairways where I couldn't hit my sand wedge and greens that would not receive my "well-played" shots... Then I'd tell him how I returned many more time to the UK and Ireland, slowly became fascinated by links golf, and came to love it.

I think Bryson will come around and embrace links golf later in life, but man, is he digging a DEEP hole...

I think his tour rep. said it best, BD is like a kid with no filter. He says stuff without malice, but also without thinking.

There's a video on his YouTube channel with the tour van guy and he mentioned how difficult getting started with him was. Something like BD trying to tell another, experienced,  clubman how he was supposed to be doing a job.

I like Bryson and I also am a nerd who can't shut up, so I think a lot of the problem is nerdy immaturity.

He's doomed to have a lot of people dislike him, but I don't think he has any maliciousness.
Over time, the guy in the ideal position derives an advantage, and delivering him further  advantage is not worth making the rest of the players suffer at the expense of fun, variety, and ultimately cost -- Jeff Warne, 12-08-2010

Bryson needs to stop blaming everything and everyone but himself when things go wrong. He shouldn’t be surprised that he is not well liked. Throwing his equipment company under the bus was ridiculous. He’s very easy not to like.

I didn't hear Bryson attack the course, just his clubs.  I have always believed Cobra to be an inferior club and would never buy them. But Bryson is paid to use them and not changing to another manufacturer is his mistake. I will bet after Cobra calling him stupid and he saying their clubs suck there will be a change soon. The Cobra roster of pros is not much to speak of so he should have figured that out sooner, but money talks. I remember when coincidentally Payne Stewart changed clubs and had a difficult time. Bryson is young and will hopefully learn, but Cobra may be dead meat. :o

Ironically, back when the great Australian club maker Tom Crow ran Cobra and designed their clubs, Payne Stewart won his first tournament with clubs Tom had made. They were beautiful irons and Greg Norman used them or a couple of years before he went to Spalding in 1984.
Payne left (to Wilson I think) for more money - money Tom couldn't afford in the early 1980s and played great golf for years. Then he moved onto Spalding and had an awful time of it for a while.

The problem is BDC is swinging a custom-made driver with 5 degrees of loft at 200mph. That causes all sorts of distortions/problems that no driver on the market can handle.

Although I did not watch much of the coverage yesterday, I was very impressed to see he was one of the few to replace his own divots. I have seen him do this on several occasions. I saw several players take big divots that could obviously be replaced (divot did not disintegrate), but did not (Els in particular on two occasions - caddy didn't replace it either). I'm also impressed every time he uses his putter to flatten the area around the hole, after holing out himself.

And yes, if I was his physics teacher, I'd tell him to forget about a lot of his silly on course atmospheric physics deliberations. How does he determine that change in relative humidity etc. during the round anyway?

I'm certainly happy that DO mentioned how BD replaces his divots. He is thoughtful in many ways,. Our inability to resist a bit of the new cancel culture pulls us toward the sewer drain that it is, and we criticize the lad. I've yet to read an off-topic thread that has as its title Why don't these celebrity golfers shut their traps, so that we know absolutely nothing of what they think?

I've sat at the 19th hole, uttered a statement or two that I've regretted, been properly called upon to elaborate, and subsequently reorganized my thoughts. Our favorite professionals need to master the knee-jerk, and BD has been quite honest in his admission that he isn't totally comfortable with the attention and the demands. That he soldiers on, is admirable.

When DJ lost at Chambers Bay, it was Wayne Gretzky who told him that he had to give 10 minutes to the press, despite DJ's absolute desire to get the hell out of there. I don't leave the classroom or the coaching grounds with my nerves exposed, my soul laid bare, as these professionals do. They are humans of a sort, as are we, and their profession does different things to them.

He's annoying and I don't really like him, but I thought his comments were a little taken out of context.

I took what he said along the lines of "my fade wasn't working today" or "I didn't have a sharp 3 point game on the basketball court tonight"

His driver was bad/off.  If he said his putter wasn't working, or his putter was a piece of garbage, would you necessarily take that to mean the actual physical putter was inferior???  It's just an extension of him and his game...what he is doing with the tools.

Now, I know he also made a comment about the face not working for/with him.  I take that as he's out of whack with that club right now.
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

The comments were definitely not taken out of context, especially in light of the reaction from Cobra reps and his profuse apology...

Paul,

Certainly no shortage of conspiracy theories these days, but this one is completely plausible.

I can just see the paparazzi pics now where they spot BDC and Brooks having a secret meetup in a hotel room, having a laugh over the extra millions, all the while watching rom-coms, painting each other's toe nails, and planning out their next round of hijinx...

What a bonanza for the other manufacturers. I don't know how many players were asked, but I know Morikawa was specifically asked, tongue-in-cheek I think, if he was getting along with his club manufacturer, and replied : "I love all my clubs. They're TaylorMade, by the way." What a hoot.

By the way, my understanding is that Bryson's first set of custom-made, single-length irons, before he went to Cobra, was made by Edel Golf out of Texas, the same company that makes my putter. That's because Bryson's original coach, Mike Schy, was the Edel distributor for Central California. Schy fitted me years ago at a golf show in Sacramento. Because Edel has its own forging plant in Texas, I believe Schy was able to go to them and work out a set of specs for single-length irons for Bryson at the time.

On #12 tee this morning, BD mentioned that there was no way that his voice calling "fore" would carry far enough for folks in the landing zone to react in time, should he miss his line. It would seem to me that the caddie would be entrusted with the initial call. When I golf with friends, it is our communal yawp of FORE that ultimately works. Should be similar for professionals.

Thing is, you don't know if the draw materializes fully until the ball is partway toward the target. It seems that the scorn for him on the yelling of "fore" is misplaced.

Bryson knows whether his ball is offline or not.Even with a "driver that sucks", a player of his talent knows whether or not it's offline or not.
(Of course, for someone allegedly so "smart" you'd think he'd understand the physics of the relative difficulty of an all out 100+% effort swing attempting to draw a low spin driver and ball with a 5 degree driver being struck on the upswing..but I digress.)
Making a decision not to yell fore because folks might not hear it is defensive justification at its finest.
It's not as if you get a finite number of times to yell the words, or a problem if you yell it and it ends up away from harm.
Furthermore, even if by chance yelling fore is a fool's errand, word of the errant shot travels downstream and people downstream hear it, they pass it along, and alert those farther potentially in harm's way.

I believe Bryson means no harm, and has many great qualities, he just needs some better advice-and to follow it. Fans have short memories and could warm up to him.

Jeff, I hope you're right, but I think fans have long memories. It will take a lot for Bryson to change is reputation and every little thing he does that is out of line will be magnified by his persona. His intensity might drive him to become world number one, but his outbursts will never endear him to the fans.
