green on the 8th at Pebble Beach? What is the likelihood of this guy making a 6? 76 yr old 23 handicap who putts one handed.

What tee is he playing?

6 seems like about the right score for said player's net par. I'm assuming he's a 23 index, so his course handicap is likely enough to get him a second pop on 8.

The fact that a short hitter can take on a much shorter carry across the chasm by playing well to the left on the 2nd/3rd shot is an underemphasized element of why that hole is so wonderful. I would guess that at least 1/4 of the shots fired toward the green on any given day are never found, which gives the plodder a chance to sneak into a win on that hole.

We are playing the gold tees. 6400yds. I was shocked to find the 8th hole is the #6 handicap. A 21.2 index is a 27 handicap from those tees.

This is basically the guy who Kramer was placing bets against in the airport on Seinfeld. An uber successful oil man from Oklahoma that knows an edge when he sees it. He will not give up two shots to move up to the whites.

For reference, the Pebble scorecard: I'm intrigued by the 1st being the #8th handicap hole.

I'd say he's the clear favorite on this hole.
Plays around the Chasm after a 150 uphill drive, 140 second, then another wood in front-a pitch/iron/or chip into the green for his "approach" without taking on any carry risk.

His 4 handicap opponent is facing the need for a good layup tee shot, followed by a daunting mid to long iron second

I'm a 4.2 index which makes me a 6 from the golds. I will gladly only give one shot on the 8th hole all day long. It's a dream scenario.

Note to jinx Gods: I fully plan on leaving my approach short right and making 6 at best. 7 more likely.

This sounds right. If you're only giving one, you're in great shape. He's gonna need 3 to get across the chasm and from there he's likely to have a pretty awkward angle. 5 isn't out of the question, but 6 is much more likely and every shot is botchable.

The advantage he has is that the conventionally-played approach is a really tough shot. Much harder than it ever seemed on TV or video games. A stronger player who gets greedy or sloppy can really make a big number and open the door for him to bunt his way to an easy win.

But there's no real "advantage" to being the shorter guy on 8 at Pebble. You're still at risk of missing short right on your crossing shot, even if you play it conservatively. And the pitch or short iron from short left isn't easy. The hole rewards the guy who's honest about his abilities and executes well, but like most great holes, the better player who plays it well is gonna be hard to beat.

IMHO those tees are too long for the best experience of the course at 23.
So much golf to play, so little time....
