One round in Denver?
« on: May 11, 2021, 03:35:30 PM »
I'm going to be in Denver in a few weeks with a free afternoon.  If access isn't an issue (and you needed to stay close to Denver), where would you play?  In the thread recently started by Brian Finn, the average scores for Castle Pines (92), Colorado Golf (98), and Cherry Hills (109) are fairly close together, with none being ranked by more than 2 of the 4 sources.  See https://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,69703.0.html.  In any event, I'm more interested in the views here, including possibly whether CommonGround is the best option, even if access isn't an issue.

Evergreen. One of the most fun golf days of my life. The single most important thing about Denver golf is elevation. Find the highest course that fits your schedule and go hit shots you may never hit again.

Not a great course by any means but when I stepped out of my car the view didn't even look real

CommonGround is a lot of fun. A good option on the public side, but not a no-brainer over other good public options and certainly not the choice if access isn't an issue.

I'd vote Cherry Hills. I love Colorado GC too. Really, the right answer between the two comes down to what you're looking for.

Colorado GC is fabulously natural golf in a scrubby setting with tons of wildlife about.

Cherry Hills feels more special to me, though. It's quintessential parkland golf with beautiful views of the front range. It's an excellent shotmaker's course. Hole-for-hole, I find it a little more memorable and engaging on a shot-for-shot basis. Obviously it has a little more history too.

I haven't played Castle Pines and can't speak to where it fits here. But really, I think you're choosing between some pretty different and excellent options, each of which has a pretty clear character. Choose the style you prefer and trust your choice.

1. Cherry Hills wonderful course great history. Grab lunch. Go for 17 in two.
2. Denver CC Never been. Couldn't work it out. It probably isn't the best course but has a mystique about it.
3. CO GC. Just terrific. On a huge piece of property and Crenshaw spent a lot of time on the greens shaping them. Play the short course.
4. Common Ground. See what can be done on flat terrain with little money.
5. Castle Pines is a bit of a drive.

Access no issue? Pretty clear, Cherry Hills or Colorado GC. Full stop.

Access is an issue? CommonGround, City Park, Arrowhead.

Denver has a great airport. Catch a plane to Ohoopee. Or not and enjoy one of the best muni selections in the country. Fossil Trace is a blast.

I do have a lonely bud on 1000 greens. He’ll play with anybody. Just compliment him on his workouts.

It's been a while but I enjoyed my one round at Denver CC. Some pretty neat holes on a classic design.

I've played Fossil Trace and that is fun. It's like a western version of Tobacco Road in spots.

Commonground is really cool and really solid.

Tom,

Out of curiosity, how many courses have you played? It must be a staggering number. And how many rounds?

No one ever believes me because it doesn't fit inside their little box. Not to mention that I can't remember. I kinda wish I could because I've had some great times.

I do not believe that you can’t remember, but I would believe the answers.

And one more: Tom W v you at match play at peak of your respective games? Neutral site of your choosing.

I think Tommy is a better golfer than me day in and day out. If we were to meet on the best golfing day of both of our lives I imagine I would win because I'm inherently not a good person. Tommy would see how important it is to me and eventually if not subconsciously let me win. I'd steal the air conditioners from his church if I thought it would give me an edge.

Cherry Hills has the history, but for me the true "Colorado" experience is the Golf Club at Bear Dance. Pine trees, boulders, creeks, changes in elevation and views of Pike's Peak. High end public with great greens half an hour south of Denver. 8)
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

I doubt I could carry your bag. I have the odd good round once in a while, but I can't hit it out of my shadow anymore.
Funny you should mention stealing the AC. About 20 years ago someone stole three heat pumps at the church. Now I know who did it.

Carl,

If I may suggest one course for you to play, Riverdale Dunes a Pete and Perry Dye design in northern Denver.  Crafted in 1984 it was a golf course that was way ahead of its time.  I have said on numerous occasions the style of architecture and the amount of people involved with this course set it apart from anything else that was being built in the 80's.

Cape holes, drivable par 4s, monster par 5s and golf that was as creative as anyone had seen in the Denver area.  Do your self a favor, if you don't get on Colorado Golf Club try your hand at playing the Dunes course.  They have two courses at that complex, The Knolls and The Dunes.

If you send me a pm I might even join you if I am around.
