Tommy -
I got to watch Viktor Hovland play a foursomes match in the 2015 Jacques Leglise Trophy matches, which were held at Royal Dornoch. The matches are a Walker Cup style competition between boys under-18 from GBI and Continental Europe. In addition to 2 players from Norway, the Euro team included players from Denmark, Iceland, France, Sweden Germany and Italy.
Hovland won his 2 singles matches. Playing with fellow Norwegian Kristoffer Reitan, they won one foursomes match and halved the other. Watching Hovland play I had a feeling he would become a very, very good player.
I was also scorekeeper in a singles match won by Guido Migliozzi. His play impressed me as well. He has gone on to win a couple lessor tournaments on the European Tour.
Watching those matches it was clear Europe was producing young players more than capable of competing with players from GB&I.
Remember, the Molinari brothers won the World Cup for Italy in 2009. I don't think anyone saw that coming.
