Pebble Beach - CBS Coverage was Spectacular!
« on: February 19, 2021, 08:54:33 AM »
IMHO golf on TV is much better without fans. I know this may seem like sacrilege, however the access provided to cameramen offers many more shot angles and views. Without fans the Tour was also able to incorporate alternative tees free of fan interference. The use of drones gave us a unique perspective of one of the most beautiful golf venues in the world.

Another positive note was the mini scoreboard superimposed in the lower right of the screen.

On a very negative note, can we eliminate the "Play through" concept? A reduced view with no commentary is useless because the commercials overwhelm the screen and sound. Please let my friend Jim Nantz say "while we were away" and then provide canned coverage of shots that we missed. Delayed full coverage is far superior to the joke of the play through.

From an architecture perspective the fanless course continues to offer more superior views of great venues.

I’m sure the networks are aware that 90% of the viewers fast forward through the commercials. This is their way of making you stay tuned to watch a crucial shot and the benefits of Viagra!

Pete, we no longer have to put up with Viagra commercials since the patent expired.  I haven’t seen one in a couple of years.   Ow it’s Peyronie’s disease for this who have a big bend after taking the Viagra.

Love the mini leaderboard. No reason why it's taken this long to get it. None at all. Should have been on screens the past ten years.

On the Playing Through stuff… would you rather they go to full on commercials? Sometimes I would be, because then I'd skip it without haste, whereas now I seem to let them play and TRY (and fail) to watch the golf window… which is probably why they're doing so much of them, because they're so effective. I'd rather have a constant on-screen window showing an ad - quite literally almost constant - than Playing Through, but it probably "works" for the network's bottom line.

It seems like CBS would have variable pricing for their commercials.

Some breaks went to full screen commercials, while others went into the split screen view.  As a purchaser of an Ad, I would certainly insist on paying a reduced rate if it was only half screen and the viewer was distracted with golf coverage (even if they couldn't hear the audio)

I certainly don't miss the screams of "Get in the Hole" or "Mash potatoes" etc.

It is that the song "Magic" is the exploited tune, and maybe the orig. band is Scottish, on their mother's side or something....honestly I thought it was an ELO song at first, but knew that Jeff Lynne is from Birmingham.  My girl and I get a laughing jag every time we hear it bandied for a patent medicine.
