Jordan Spieth Today ?
« on: February 14, 2021, 07:59:40 AM »
 ???

Looks like Spieth is ready to break thru soon. How will the architecture at PB help him or hurt him given his predilection for wild tee shots? It would be a pretty exciting to be on that bag today >

My one and only experience at Pebble was that it wasn't that tight. I was playing resort conditions. I didn't even find the course that difficult. I thought Spyglass was much harder.

Agree it gives you some pretty wide corridors to hit the tee shot and then gets tougher from there. Perfect venue for Spieth.

I’ll be rooting for him. Hope he manages the ball-in-the-air-whining...

Think it will be difficult day though. Par putts here seem to be as difficult as anywhere on earth for these guys. Expect him to have a few.

Are the fairways noticeably wider then previously? This could be a several year evolution that I’ve missed. That would seem to help him.

If the wind is down, he’ll still need to shoot 4, 5 or 6 under to win.

 8)  Pressure, pressure on Jordan for the W but perhaps less today, given the 4 bogies in 3rd round?  Reality strikes hard, but how often?

Windy day would definitely help him as would limit the movers. Only played there once but didn't feel like it was too hard to keep it in play. Remember hitting a 1-iron off the tee on #8 and thought I hit it dead right only to find it perfect. Remember the tee shot on 18 as being the toughest to visualize.

The key to Pebble appears to be the ability to flight your irons, a lost art. A little more touch shots than at many venues they play every week. I'm with Sully on keeping the microphone away from him, though most seem to think he's a good dude.

He is perhaps the best putter in the world again right now, nice to bring that to any fight. Didn't feel it last week but Pebble might be the ticket.

Looks like a little breezy and high of 56 degrees today.

I think he does it.
Surrounded by players trying to prove themselves, they'll all be feeling heat.
Small greens, crisp conditions(hopefully a bit of wind) help him as imagination will be required.

I worry about his predilection for going right off the tee:especially 8-10, 13-15.

I'll be rooting for a fellow Longhorn--Hook 'Em.

I wonder how playing with Lashley and Hoge works out? Neither of them has been in this position much before. If their games go south, always possible JS' game goes south with them.

I don't like having a conversation where one party is wearing sunglasses. Spieth is at a disadvantage with this caddie.

Jordan has won here before. His misses are one-way, his putting has improved. Strength of field is low, no top 10 in the world player.
Am taping, as will be watching Daytona

That shot on the 14th plays really long. Never forgot how good I hit my third there with a wedge and nuked it and was way short , not even close to right yardage . There must be elevation there that is imperceptible. Spieth taking gas pipe again, shame for him but that's this game.

That's because Spyglass is much harder. :-)

Pebble in benign conditions is just not very difficult.  It can definitely jump up and bite you -- especially the back nine -- but it's just not that tough unless the rough is stupid or it's windy, etc.

First time I played it I was literally intimidated just to be there. I was new to "good" golf, and I shot a wad. Just never felt comfortable the entire day.

Second time, in similar conditions, was considerably better.

Unbelievable commentary as Berger makes a 30 footer for eagle to win...speechless.

Watching Spieths caddy on 14 begging Jordan to take more club, again and again.  And then Jordan overrules and bogeys from 120 yards. Instant Doh!!

From 120 yards to the back tier it is 25 feet uphill  :o , according to Google Earth.

The elevation change into the 14th green is easily perceptible, but what you can's see from 125 yards out is how small the upper left tier is.  Once you factor in how quickly a shot missed just right of the target will in the best case end up on a lower tier and in many cases end up all the way off the front of the green with that deep bunker in your face, an approach to the upper tier might be the most exacting shot on the entire course.  In places like that, Pebble is a precursor to TPC Sawgrass before it was softened a bit.  There are numerous shots that place you on a razor's edge with a severe penalty for missing the mark by a few feet.  Winter conditioning and weather tends to reduce the danger of those shots for pros.

My biggest takeaway from the telecast is Cantlay's swing.  I'm sure many have voiced this thought before, but his action looks like Elkington.  Seemingly effortless power.  It's surprising his 2013 back injury was golf-related as it looks like his swing puts little to no stress on his body.  Of course, I'm not a swing coach or physiologist, but it's refreshing to watch a younger player who's not jumping out of his shoes.

Phil, are you from California? Curious about your comment about winter conditions being easier.

I'm a NoCal who's played Pebble eight times and galleried scores of Crosby days.  My comment about weather is simply that PB never plays fast & firm in February which explains 62s at the AT&T and nothing approaching that in the US Open.  Three players have shot 10-under 62 at the AT&T, but the Open course record is 6-under 65.  The course in February is softer and has wider fairways to accommodate the amateurs.  I enjoyed seeing how they tweaked the course this year without the ams: setting up #4 as driveable, today's 10th tee to the right of the 9th green which calls for a tee shot over the heads of beachgoers, etc.

Watching Speith and Greller the last couple of weeks has been interesting. It is not an anomaly to see them differ on club selection.
