Maybe OT: Winning score at Winged Foot...?
« on: September 16, 2020, 01:29:05 PM »
Saw an interview with the super on TGC and he seemed to believe that, with temps in low 50's at night and mid-60's during the day, the course is going to be firm and fast.

with 5" juicy rough,25 yard FWs, long par 4s and par 3s and those green complexes...

I think we will see the champion hoisting the trophy at +5.

Will be fun to watch.

Those guys are very good.  But, no rain in the forecast, and not much recently?  I would lean toward a couple over par.  It's five or ten shots harder around the greens than Harding Park, and the setup and weather are otherwise quite similar.

I wonder if any player in the field will consider doing a 1959 Billy Casper on the 3rd hole?

I'm going to say +2.
I'm also going to predict that the low round of the week will be a -4 and it will be on Friday. ;D

As if we needed more, I'm going to say that the winner will not break par on Sunday.

Hale Irwin hit a 2-iron approach into the last hole in '74.

This week's winner will be hitting what - 8-iron?

Winner will be easily under par. I'll say -4.

Not sure how Olympia Fields compares to WFW, but I haven't seen the pros get throttled like they did at the BMW in quite awhile..

I agree. And WHW:

- is longer
- has narrower FWs
- US Open rough
- Lightning greens
- severe, back to front canted greens
- US open pressure
- cool conditions and no rain

Can these guys really bomb it 320+ and hit 25 yard FWs with that much consistency?

I reckon +2, but wouldn't be surprised with level par.

Function of the weather.  As of right now forecast is for little wind (max about 7mph) today (Thurs).  Then <0.06" rain ending around 7am Fri...followed by winds up to 13-15mph.  And weekend with max winds of about 10-12mph.  With that forecast I would guess 3 or 4 over wins it.  If forecast holds place gets pretty form and dry over weekend.

Add 5 mph to all wind speeds and my forecast goes to 7-8 over.

After watching the evidence of the first 2 hours of play, your Honor, your guess is DQ-ed...;-)

Wind coming, cooler temps...we will see.
Conditions are as benign as they get right now. ZEE-RO wind and soft greens.

Today is definitely the ~easy~ day of the week on the forecast. I've had -3 penciled in as the winning score. I think today and tomorrow we'll see someone settle at -6 and then everyone will retreat over the weekend.

Matsuyama just had 154 into 18 green. I have no idea what that is for a Tour pro - PW?

No wind and soft turf = low scores no matter the course for these guys.

Technology has also gotten to the point that these guys can hit 9 irons and wedges to 500-yard par-4's. So regardless of how crazy WFW's greens are, they are able to get close to a lot of pins.

I'm shocked how slow (and green????????) the course is right now. Mid September, no rain, and wall to wall green??

I'm torn as to number, even with evidence and (so far) conditions...

On one hand, if the both fairway and greens firm up (as they are correctly saying on TV, not speed up)... scores will congeal on more traditional WF numbers (E 280+/-).... yet I'm also seeing something so telling about the bashers in "defeating" double bogey danger they would otherwise face...and I'm not just talking DeChambeau.  When you can defeat 3 inch birds nest rough and the obliquest of angles to wickedly sloped greens, running away with a Gap Wedge from 127...  the other 11 clubs are rarely used.

I'm going to split the baby and say -4  (276)... an average for the winner of -1 under a day.  The pressure of the major win will get all but two or three of them, and the WFW we're used to will be awaiting those Sunday nerves, which is different than Thursday's focus.

There is no way these greens are running at 13.  I play a course that is unplayable with green speeds at 12, and I can't believe the pitch in WF's greens is less severe than Rolling Green's.  I'd say they are running at 11, maybe 11.5.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.  I'm sure they are very challenging.  But does golf really have to participate in today's world of "alternative facts?"
