Re: A sign of a good/great course?

My memory for specific golf holes has never been that good. But the whole experience, if it was good/great, certainly enables my recall. For instance PV 25-30 years ago and Chicago Golf 20 years ago are vivid.

For me the sign of a good/great course is the quality of the green complexes.

I do remember really bad holes/courses pretty well.

Personally, if I'm immediately able to recall the entire routing and general characteristics of the majority of holes, it's likely a course I enjoyed. The more vivid the recollection, the more I probably enjoyed it. That doesn't necessarily make it "good/great" in the eyes of GCA.com, but it does rank it highly in my own mind.

Conversely, courses I can't recall the routing are typically because I find them generic and/or repetitive, and many of the holes blend together in my head.

I remember a lot about Wolf Point in Mesquite, NV

Except the name of the course, apparently.

Crap!  I thought about checking and I should have.  I will edit.

I am amazed at how good the memory of some of you guys are. I don't think of myself as having a bad memory, but I don't recall many holes of a course I have only played once for example. I have played with a friend of mine who posts alot of reviews on top100golfcourses who takes notes of holes and after the round enters into a spreadsheet. That is studious, not necessarily having a great memory.

I tend to remember a few holes and the overall vibe of the course and the enjoyment it brings me. Of course it helps if I played well, which maybe is why I don't recall as much as some of you. ;)
